Like I said I love my MAXTOR. I used to swear by WD but they have had problems. Check BEST BUY (if you have one locally) my drive was $139.99 plus tax.

Check out some reviews of these drives here. I went with the Quantum Fireball Plus LM which is an ATA66 drive and has a 2mb buffer 7200rpm. I tested this drive with SiSoft Sandra. According to its scores, the average ATA66 drive in the 30 gig size is around 13,000. I scored over 17,000 with the Quantum. My roommate has the Maxtor drive everyone in this thread is raving about and he can't achieve nearly the speed/performance that I do with this one. The Quantum scored second highest on all performance reviews next to the IBM GXP drives. My opinion is rather unbiased and I have recent experience with both drives.

Im kind of disappointed at that performance, but it'd be definitely cheaper than IBM, so its still a good buy.

If I were you...I wouldn't touch Maxtor w/a 10 foot pole. I've had to RMA 2 40 gig 7200rpm drives in the last 6 months. I also have friends that work at a computer repair shop...and they see more dead Maxtors than any other drive on the market. If I wer you...I'd go IBM or WD. Maxtor just bought Quantum from what I've heard, so I'd stay away from that...but I'd personally go w/IBM. I have a 14 gig IBM that I've been using for 2 years...and it hasn't given me any problems...It was great when the Maxtor kept going down, because old trusty IBM was lookin at me straight in the eye...

Ive heard about more problems with WD and IBM then I need to hear. Ive had good experiance with Maxtor as well as others have. Ive decided on Maxtor.

Divine thats funny.... In win2K I score 21,000 with my maxtor and NTFS5.... In 98 I score 19,500....

Bling, buy.com pulled the $30 off coupons . Quantum still has the rebates. I have the IBM 30 gig and really love it. Its so fast and quiet, its incredible. I did also order a Quantum LM 30 gig yesterday for another system. I'm cheap and can't resist a good deal. $130 - $30 coupon - $30 rebate and free shipping!! $78 for a (nice) 30 gig drive is hard to beat.

Oh the typical complaint... &quot;I got a brand X and it died so its the worst in the world!!&quot;. Well guess what? I've met people who've QC'ed hard drives for more than 15 years and over 160,000 hard drives, turns out that Maxtor is rock solid, and WD is at the bottom. 1 or 2 drive experience mean very little and rarely represent the truth about a company's reliability. The fact is there are people on the other side of the planet who's had 2 IBMs or WDs died on them and they make the same ignorant complaints. AmdEmAll, do not listen to this bad advice.

Like I said earlier I WAS a diehard WD fan. A friend had two of their 5.? GB drives die. The first died and it took them three weeks to ship a replacement to him. The replacement died about six months later. That one took just shy of three weeks. I have had atleast three other friends in the last year loose WDs

I just found out I was having issues with 2 of my CD-ROM and CD-RW drives. Probably caused some incorrect scores. When I get the replacements I'll let you know what I score.
