sister's dog comes over and there are a couple of stray cats in the neighborhood that sometimes come in the yard. The dog always runs after them but never catches them. It's like the dogs I see that always chase after the birds. They never get close but must just enjoy the act. Do they actually hurt the cats?

depends. They will just play with it. Poke it with their nose and maybe gently bite it. Cats can defend themself really well. That dog could get hurt.

When my cat had kittens in the garage the neighbors dog (german shep) came into the garage and my cat jumped on the dog's back and it was stuck there for a good 15 seconds while the dog was crying.

My grandma's dogs used to be ok around cats until they got sprayed by a skunk, from then on they used to average at least one kill a month

I had a friend in grade school whose malamute witnessed a cat magic show. Yuck, all over the yard, you couldn't really tell it used to be a cat.

A dog will kill a cat as a competitior if the dog knows how and is fast enough. Thoroughly docile dogs are poor hunters and cats are usually pretty damn fast. A part wolf will most assuredly kill the ever loving fvck out of a cat if it can.

had a momma cat that did much the same to the neighbor's collie. It came over and barked at the kittens. She came out of nowhere and placed an almost perfect tic-tac-toe pattern across the black of that dogs's nose, a perfect left and a right cross. The scars were there forever, they turned white later. She then rode on the collie's ass right out of the yard at full speed, hanging on with all four and biting the living sh!t out of the dog's ass! Needless to say, that dog never came back;)

I've seen more cats pwned the living $hit out of dogs than vise versa.

Cats can be viscous little balls of fluff when gaurding their territory/off-spring.

Just think of Shrek 2!!!

Ah..reminds me of when my miniature collie (think of a 25 lb Lassie) caught a cat that couldn't jump on the fence...hahaha...he got the crap scratched out of his nose and anytime you say CAT around him he perks up...knows exactly what it is :)

Cats can chew them off quite easy so not a big deal.

Worms is another matter but unless the dog eats the cats crap or spends time with the cat it's not much of a deal.

Neighbors did not have to worry about feeding strays anymore though. They were pretty much docile to everything else. There was a semi-tame crow that would always come to visit and they would let it eat out of their bowl.

Yup, I think they had a little wolf in em, mostly mutts, black one did have multi colored eyes and they were both about large rotty size.

My dog and my cat usually get along pretty well, but my dog knows who's boss. About half the time I go into the garage (their home), I see my dog sharing the pillow with my cat. The other half of the time, my dog's gotten booted.

As far as hunting goes, my dog couldn't catch a flea. He chases after birds and other dogs all the time, and used to chase cars. Neither one wishes to hurt the object in question, but my cat makes a much better natural hunter. She catches mice a lot and just plays with them until they die. She looks disappointed when they actually die though, as they're not as amusing just lying there on the ground. I went out into the garage one time, and my cat was chasing around this mouse for awhile. She'd just pick it up in her mouth and throw it around or paw at it or something. After about five minutes of watching that, it got a little old, so when the mouse ran by me I kicked it across the garage into the door, and that rather hindered it's mobility, so the cat got disappointed. She still played with it until it died and then some though. I think it's because we don't give her anything else to do.

My GF's German Shepherd was scared to death of her cat. He got too close one time and was promptly scratched on the nose. :)
