I've been thinkin about upgrading to an Opteron 170 as my entry into dual core. Since I haven't been following computer hardware for that long, I get the feeling that 939 isnt going to see processors that outdo the Opterons for their price. The socket 939 opterons will be converted to socket Ms by the end of the year, and I want to get a hold of one for my asus a8n-sli premium. Does any agree with me on this? Or are there better procesors on the horizon for socket 939. I know the FX-60 is going to be amazingly fast for a dual core, but the price just isn't worth it. Let me know your opinions thnx.

Btw, is my mobo compatible with an opteron - -?

I think the 170 is probably your best choice right now.(Unless you can find a 165 on the cheap). AMD have denied rumors of discontinuing the Opties for 939 but they also stick in the phrase for server/workstations so trying to buy one retail soon might be a challange....

the 1xx series will be going to M2. again, announcement will prolly be made in late Q1, availability in late Q2, and actual channel parts available shortly thereafter. AMD will commit to manufacturing s939 parts for the duration of 2006.

the 2xx/8xx series will be going to socket F. that's a whole different ball game.

The same thing that happened to socket 754. They will still produce the older parts, but will put the focus on the new tech.

S754 is "old" now, but they are still produced... Same way with S939, they will keep on going after M2 is around... Opteron is perfectly compatible with your mobo, don't worry about that...
