What happens to all those coins that we throw into fountains?

Often it gets given to charity (there are usually signs near some fountain that says which charity it's given to)

Hehe, I kid you not. I forget which country it was in, but I noticed a bunch of bums keeping an eye out for tourists who'd try to get some coins out, rather than in.

And I do remember a bunch of places with notices that coin collection from the fountain is prohibited.

I work midnight security at a mall (I just finished college) and the cleaning guys would steal the change from the fountains. Some got fired for doing this act.

I think they get emptied every month or 2, it depends on the owner though where the money actually goes.
