...for a really long time? Would it be possible to die from lack of sleep?

yeah, im pretty sure your brain lets our some sort of chemical that actually kills you. it takes a while, but its like a defense mechanism. i guess your body figures if you are not sleeping, something must be wrong lol and you self destruct. i know some people have been awake for like 10-11 days, but you are supposed to die after like 8 i think.

certain functions only take place while you are asleep. i forget which ones, but they are important...its like your body wont fix itself until you are asleep in some aspects

Long enough? You die.

how?
Lack of sleep. One's body needs sleep to survive.

I still havent heard any hard facts on what happens if you dont sleep...

so did you not read what i wrote?

you posted while I was posting...it says how many hours...but it doesnt tell what happens.

I am just curious. I have been up for 22 hours now and I am not a bit tired. It should also be noted that I have had about 3 pots of coffee and probably a 2 liter of diet pepsi. I can however, type at about 257 WPM right now.

riiiight. by the way, i have stayed awake for 3 days and 5 hours once. i wasnt tired until the third day. i had a baseball game on day 2. you dont get all that tired until you reach your personal threshold, and then it goes downhill fast. i slept for a long time and it really threw me off for a few days. also, if you sleep short enough to not reach REM, you arent tired the next day. you can sleep 2 hours and have more energy than you would have had you slept for 4-5. too much is also bad.

edit: sleeping shorter than rather longer eventually catches up with you, however, and usually within a week you become extremely tired. for 1 or 2 days, you can sleep for 2-3 hours and be normal.

I'm not sure the exact mechanism as to why you die from lack of sleep is understood, if that's maybe what you're asking.

Your brain [lack of it remaining] will kill you eventually from lack of sleep i believe.
Read about it once somewhere...
