What happens if u dont use the thermal grease?

every one wnats the most thermal conductive grease! wouldnt metal of HS touching the CPU be most conductive solution?

The metal of the heatsink doesn't touch the CPU because of irregularities in both surfaces. The gap because of the minutely rough surfaces is filled by the compound. The difference from compound to no compound can be fatal to the device in question.

People are usually referring to "thermally conductive" and not "electrically conductive" paste. Right now Artic Silver is the most popular because it is an efficiant heat conductor without being electrically conductive. Yes there are electrically conductive pastes. At one point Copper Paste was the rage but one misapplication and ZAP!!!!

dkozloski is right that not using paste can be fatal since the heatsink and slug are never perfectly flat.
