What happens if the phone's oleophobic coating wears off?

Does the phone's screen get scratch more easily?

I use isopropyl alochol to clean the phone's screen and I have read that it can also degrade the oleophobic coating.

I don't believe the oleophobic coating provides any scratch protection.
It just makes the screen easier to clean and smoother to swipe.

your phone becomes a fingerprint magnet after that. My iPhone 5 is like that.

However you can apply a new oleophobic coating if you want. You can purchase it off Amazon.

This.

It looks really horrible when some of it has worn away and some remains.
Yeah, I remember when my iPhone 4 was approaching three years old. That phone was impossible to keep clean. "Did you eat a Big Mac and then smear grease all over your phone, or what?" That was what my boss told me once when he saw the phone laying on the conference table... :p

I used a magic eraser to get rid of the oleophobic coating on my camera lens. The result is much better pictures.

Wow, I'm hoping you mean something like the lens on your phones camera and not a DSLR lens. You won't catch a magic eraser within 20 feet of any camera lens that I am responsible for.
