What happens if I put more memory than the capacity?

I have a desktop with 4 memory slots. Spec says the maximum is 4GB. Is it worth to try 2 x 4, and see if it works? 🙂

Thank you, Blain, for the offer. The one that I'm interested in putting 4x2gb is Dimension 9150. I have another pc with GIGABYTE GA-8I848P-G 478 Intel 848P that I'm interested in putting 3x1gb to see if it works. 🙂

There's a lot of variables. Sometimes the max amount is just the tested/supported amount and sometimes you're really limited by the chipset and the amount it'll physically address.

So, it guess it doesn't hurt to try at the potential cost of returning it. 🙂

Thank you all for the feedback. For my Dell, it looks like there is a limit on physical memory for 32 bit computers anyway. So, I don't see much sense in risking. I just ordered a $30 ram for my old Gigabyte to take a chance. 🙂
