What happens if I fail to respond to a jury summon in CA?

I got summoned. I'm up this Weds. but I'm not going to be able to physically show up. Didn't return the summon form either.

As I understand it, when I don't show up they will send me a notice. Then if I have a good excuse they will let me off the hook?

They don't care about arresting you either. They'll mail you another one if you don't respond to the 1st one. If you don't respond to the 2nd summon, they'll send out the police to arrest your ass.

1st you have assholes who don't vote 'cause the issues don't affect them, then you have assholes who don't respond to jury summon 'cause it takes up their time. Maybe 911 dispatch should tell you to fuck off when you have an emergency.

Oh, I go. I just get thrown out very quickly when I start talking about jury nullification. The system is not designed to get smart and reasonable people on the jury, it's designed to take people who are easily molded by attorneys.

You can always resist arrest and then this way force some people to come to your trial and if we all do this enough no one will be left to post here since we all would be in jail or sitting as a jury. :(

just call them. they are actually pretty lenient if you bother to at least contact them. You also have a 1 time defer thingy.

In NY, they will just send you another one in 3 months for another Jury Duty. They will do it again for another 3 months... You miss your 3rd one, they will send you a letter with a final warning to appear in the court office to explain yourself and to personally receive your fourth and final jury summons for which you will face a fine and certain imprisonment if you do not show. I know this because my father(who does not speak english and is retired in China) has been getting them. The court would not grant him an exemption and has been sending him summons constantly. I usually take it to the court to explain and he'd get an excusal for 3 months... eventually I got sick of showing up every 3 months to get him an excusal and decided to ignore them 3 at a time and show up on the 4th one to explain which would usually grant him another excusal and reset the thing altogether.

They will do nothing. I forgot to do mine this year and they never did anything.

Is it because of work? because your work is legally required to continue your pay while you're on the jury. if its a disability, they encourage everyone with disabilities to go. you can also call and reschedule if you want. i did it last year.

if you find a way to totally get out of it let me know! :) or do what homer simpsons said and say you're prejudice against all races :p

They'll send the sheriff to your door and make you go. seriously

And also risk fine and/or jail.

LOL. Please. You think they're going to spend the time and money to send a sheriff after you?

Call them at least. Just tell them you cannot attend the jury summons. They are typically lenient with you if you try to contact them. If you ignore them, they will no longer be lenient.

I've got to say that I served on a jury two years ago. The trial was criminal, but short. It was actually a great experience and I'm glad that I was selected.

That's one thing I didn't miss about California, getting called for jury duty almost every year, although serving on a jury can be fun depending on the case. Unfortunately, I almost got stuck on a jury for a dental malpractice "Save the tooth" case. Half the courtroom was holding back from laughing most of the time, and the defense lawyer looked like a cross between Newt Gingrich and Phil Donahue.
