The blocking was purely political in nature. They have NO real reason to block his confirmation, and that's why they used the filibuster.

Exactly, they blocked him for the sole reason of being one of Bush's picks.

And s far as the memos go, the fact that the only paper record of his beliefs lies in privileged information isn't really the Democrats' problem. With no judicial record and a stonewall performance at the hearings, what are the Senators supposed to go on? His name? If the Republicans don't want to hand over the documents then they should find someone else whose record isn't encased entirely in confidential material.
