The highest end video card from the currently leading GPU maker is expensive? Who would have guessed?

Even rich people know the concept of "value" (err... I hope they do, at least), and a halo product like the 5970 is not a good value.

Thanks for the friendly responses. Yes there is a shortage of them, I guess this will slowly change hope soo...thanks

At least its a dual GPU card, Nvidia usualy launches its flagship single GPU cards at $600+, well back when they had the best cards anyways. And since its not more than twice the cost of 2 5870's its still cheaper than crossfiring 2 5870's.

I have had mine since launch. Got it through my employer for $580, so it wasn't that bad really.

Prices skyrocketed right after I got mine though.

5970 is actually a really good value if you're going to be shelling out for that level of performance. consider that the 5970 is faster than 2 5850s, for the same price as 2 5850s, and can clock to 5870 performance on each gpu with overclocking and a good non reference cooler design, all for way less than 2 5870s. if you consider that vs the value of 2 5870s, its actually really nice, you're just paying a shit ton for it so its perceived as a bad value, when in fact the 5870 is probably the worst on a price/performance ratio standpoint if raw cost isnt part of the consideration. some people just dont care though, or there's other things that they have to consider. i went for 4 5870s because when i got my first 2, the 5850 and 5970 werent even out yet, and i got my 3rd not originally planning to get a 4th for it, but i wanted something i could potentially CF with the other 2 later down the road, and getting a 5850 didnt really make as much sense, especially since i had the budget for the 5870 lol

ed: the reason you still arent seeing many is because those GPUs they're using are specially binned for their power characteristics. as is the card has a 294w TDP, so if it's not binned exactly right then the card will be outside PCI-e spec and big OEM vendors wont want to use them in their systems. with the yields on TSMC 40nm still not up to par, it makes them hard to make, and it's why most of the cards are priced $100-150 above MSRP

i tried to buy a 5970, the store told i wasnt rich enough and demanded to see $2 million in cash before i'm allowed to buy one.

It has been my personal experience that not-rich people remain not-rich because of purchasing expensive items.

PC gaming is a very cheap hobby.

My wife can blow $300 in a weekend by getting her toes & hair done, a walmart trip and taking the kids out to the movies.

From that perspective a $700 video card every six months or so is downright reasonable -- especially if the hardware is re-sold to partly finance the new hardware.

now make a thread how diamond studded solid gold jewerly is expensive, 200k$ cards are expensive, and private jets are expensive...

I really don't understand your complaint here... yes, it is ridiculously expensive and 99% of people will not be able to afford it... so?

PS... why the focus on that one card? try running quad xfire or triple SLI with 2x5970 or 3xGTX480... don't forget you 1.5KW PSU... and the 1500$ intel Xtreme CPU (apparently being rich means you can't spell properly.)
