what happened to the 14.1" notebooks?

I was looking somewhere else, but that ABS notebook appears to be a variation of the Compal GL30: link
 
I found the same info at notebookreviews forums earlier. It seems that Compal makes lots of lappies for lots of companies.

Compal is one of the big ODMs like Quanta.

Asus is another ODM, but I think it is a little bit smaller than Compal and Quanta.
 
Compaq/HP still makes 14.1" widescreen notebooks I believe.
I have one of those value lines - cost me $400 or so.

i have a 14.1" widescreen laptop for work, but i think the 13.3" widescreen is the perfect size.

i would never use own anything bigger than 14.1".

The dv2000 series is an excellent example; however, HP's monumental stupidity means they don't sell the Core 2 Duo version in Canada. We get only the Turion X2 version - which has lower performance and battery life.

I just picked up a great 14.1" notebook... but it was a discontinued core duo model, and from what I can see the model was not updated to core 2.

16x10 @15" I wouldn't have minded so much., but 15.4 is excessive for a WXGA screen size on a notebook, and since higher resolutions seem to have become rare, too, 14.1" (or smaller) was my only absolute criteria when I was shopping.

 
my ideal laptop is:
11.1" @ 1366x768 - easy to get an external screen with the same res
low power dual-core with 64bit
DX10 onboard graphics with 256MB ram
 
Here's a really tough 14.1 unit - a bit heavy at 13.5 lbs - but then - you can check it - no need to carry it. 🙂

I once heard someone commenting that his ASUS was a good laptop to a Mac user. The poor fool didn't know when to keep quiet and claimed his laptop was "better". I promptly informed him that his beloved "Apple" notebook was manufactured by ASUS 😉

I like Macs, but please, don't be a fanboy. This post brought to you on an OSX Intel C2D based Mac Mini. 😎

I think you can get LG notebooks in the U.S., they are just hard to come by. Milestonepc.com sells a few LG notebooks to U.S. customers if anyone was interested.
