Whelp, while I wait, maybe someone here knows...
I've got an nforce2 non-deluxe board... onboard audio disabled in Bios.
Upon installing a fresh copy of Win XP, if I IMMEDIATELY install my Turtle Beach soundcard drivers (either the beta or the year old "certified" ones) I get a problem with MP3 playback. Any mp3 player (Winamp, WMP, jukebox, whatever) will get "stuck" mid song and pretty much "smear" or rapidly repeat a tiny section of sound. It usually happens about 5 seconds into playback of any song, and will also continue to happen later if the computer is taxed by loading other programs during playback.
This occurs in all other installation cases as well. If I do the nforce drivers first, get internet capability, and do windows update, installing my TBSC drivers later, same problem occurs.
I THOUGHT it was related to which slot I actually put the sound card in... during my last installation, I had thought that that had fixed the problem (moving the card from slot 2 to slot 4 or something) but I haven't touched the card, and the problem is occuring during this installation......
So weird.
