People have always been this way, and always will be. Live your own life as you see fit and enjoy.

So a child molestor, who sees child molestation as a "fit" way to live life, should be allowed to do so and enjoy it?

There is a difference between committing a grievous crime against a young child and someone with bad manners or a false sense of entitlement.

I can't wait to see how long it'll be before you mention Hitler.

Well, where does one draw the line, and who determines where that line should be draw. If everything is relative, who decides what is right and what is wrong, and how do they go about that determination? I'm addressing morals and common sense in general. And it wasn't I who mentioned Hitler, the thought never crossed my mind, it was you who brought up the name. So take your "

" elsewhere, please.

My remark about Hitler was partly a reference to Godwin's law and partly an extension of your using one extreme to justify your righteous sense of outrage.

Humans are inherently evil, it is up to their environment to teach them right from wrong, and the socially acceptable standards for good. However, in today's society of rap, porn, and movies, the values aren't what they used to be. Whether that is good or bad is for each individual to decide.
I watch porn and violent, criminal movies and I'm a law-abiding, moral, and ethical person.

Why isn't there an option like "I haven't formed an opinion yet, because I haven't finished examining the data" or some inane reason like that?

I'm assuming that you didn't when your values were being formed, i.e. between age 0-14. I could be assuming wrong. And, of course, it doesn't apply in all cases, it's just an example. But for the majority, they are a product of their environment, and these things help shape what they deem to be acceptable in society.

I disagree.

I think that people are just as stupid and evil, smart and good as they have always been or ever will be. I don't think social justice or fairness have changed anytime in the last 300 years.

What HAS changed is the Fact that we all watch news about what is happening all over the world, and the news that gets reported is almost exclusivley about BAD things.

Your just more aware of all the bad crap going on.

You never turn on CNN or NPR and hear "News flash: Iranian woman backs cookies for the neighbor kids"

Another thread in another section of these boards sparked this in my head.

Not mentioning any names, but... some people seem to think it's ok to RMA a computer componant that was damaged by overclocking, and get a free replacement. Does this strike anyone as being wrong? If you bought a new car, never changed the oil, and took it back 3 years later when the engine seized, do you think you're entitled to a new engine? What makes it any different than computer hardware?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an anti-overclocking fanatic as you can see from my sig and other posts I've made. I'm all for queezing every last bit of performance out of the hardware you buy. But if you don't know what you're doing, and the hardware fails, you are NOT entitled to a free replacement! To me that's just common sense.

That's just one example of the lack of morals and common sense in society today. You see it all the time, mostly with teenagers, but even some adults.

Another example... a small creek runs behind my house, so everyone's backyard on this street is about twice as big as everyone else's cause they had to keep the houses a certain distance from the creek. Well... kids walk down the creek to get from one place to another, which is fine. But the other day, a group of kids riding their bikes decided they didn't want to ride all the way to the end of the creek... so they cut up through our property to get to the street. Now... my parents always taught me to respect other people's property... which to me means, you shouldn't ride your bike across someone else's lawn. Were the kids not taught that this was wrong? Or do they just not listen to their parents? I went out there and asked them not to ride their bikes across my lawn again, and they looked at me like I was crazy!

Yet another example that I posted about a few months ago... the neighbor was having a deck built, and they needed to get the wood to the back yard of course. So instead of driving around to the end of the street, and driving back behind the houses in the brush and weeds to get to the back yard... they just drove the huge flatbed truck across my lawn into the neighbor's backyard. What is wrong with these people? What makes them think it's perfectly fine to drive across MY lawn to get where they want to be?

There must be some parents who have, and who are failing to instill morals in their children. This complete lack of respect for other people and their property is getting out of hand. On a more extreme end, you have people killing eachother over minor disagreements/arguments. On a more innocent end, you have people returning products that they damaged by using it in a way the manufacturer didn't intend. Granted, the latter is not as severe... but is it any less wrong?

Feel free to post your feelings on what I've said... if you disagree, please keep it civil.

Oh, and yes I think that some things are less wrong than others and I think that most societies have believed that for about as long as there have been laws.

We dont give people the death penalty for stealing a twinkie. We must assume that stealing a twinkie is less wrong than svagley murdering innocent young women, and then force feeding the remains to their family members.

I don' think that stealing a twinky or abusing an RMA service is right, but you arent going to convince me it is AS wrong as murder, rape, etc.

I like my lawn as well, but i'm not going to execute someone because they rode their bike across it... you see what I mean?

The idea of personal property is not conservative or liberal.

It's capitalistic. Democracy is not an economic system, its a political system

Socialism and Capitalism are not political systems, they are economic systems.

Being liberal or conservative has nothing to do with having a free market and personal property in general, and I think its rather stupid to associate those kinds of things.

I also thing political labels are stupid and short sited. It's an easy way for stupif and lazy people to not have to think about any kind of issues, they just identify themselves with a certain party and stop thinking.

I will never in my life identify myself with one political party or another, and I believe political parties should be illigal

Humans in general are inherently neither good nor evil. They are, however, self-serving. It's far easier to care about what you want and how you're going to get it than it is to take into consideration the needs, wants, and desires of everyone around you.

I agree. George Washington pleaded with John Adams and Thomas Jefferson (since they had a bitter rivalry) not to form any political factions. He feared that people would not think for themselves, and become robots of the parties, which is exactly what happened.

Damn bike tracks in your grass!! 🙁

Yeah! It's not like my yard is perfect... there's weeds and some brown areas and crab grass... but there's no need to make it any worse... especially when someone who doesn't even own it decides they can do whatever they want to it.

Which brings up another subject... the people who let their dogs loose in the neighborhood, or the ones who walk their dog and let them crap on other people's yards. This summer I've returned about 4 dog piles to the owner.

It's unfortunate how rude others are. However, you can extend that to yourself as well. I keep up my lawn meticulously and I hate seeing lawns that arent taking care of as well as mine is. This probably offends me as much as the dog poop offends you.

these kinds of things are difficult to reconcile, these matters of rudeness. Should you be forced to make your lawn look nice for me? No, I dont think so, but I still dont like it.....

IMHO time have just changed, the rush of the world and getting stuff done now now now and with things like life being a click away no one seems to have patience to slow down and remember basic manners. Rambling i know, but on the graveyard and this place is dead as hoffa

I see, and agree, with your point. I should have said: Humans are inherently open-minded, and unknowing of the socially acceptable values in the world, and thus are products of their environment.

I've noticed that people, regardless of party affiliation, LOVE to blame all of their problems and societies problems on the leader from the party they dont like.

This is lazy. We are a representative democracy. WE are responsible for the behavior of our leaders.

Blame yourself. Saying "I didnt vote for him" doesnt count. You abide by the will of the masses and we all accept the resonsibility together.

It's because too many people have the "whateva, whateva, I do what I want" attitude. When they see others doing it they will be prone to do it too. No respect.

That's bullshite. That leaves our leaders the opportunity to be lazy, when they should be just the opposite. Each individual is responsible for his/her own actions, regardless of if they were elected by the masses or not.

I think personal responsibility is a big issue. Old school says if you do it, you are responsible. New school says it is someone else's fault that I did it.

I have to agree, but that can be changed. My troops who come in (along with me when i was new) have the same mindset... the military has the luxury of changing you or booting you. Simpleton thinking but effective at the same time.

They are responsible. TO US. That's why we can recall them. Their power is derived from US. We give them their power and we take it away. That makes us responsible for making sure THEY are responsible.

duh

Society has always sucked...I think it's just basic decency that's finally breaking down. Heh, we'll probably have a revival in a hundred years or so.

Love that line. Classic! Cynicism drives me up the wall! I know exactly what you're saying in the original post.

Thank you, I'm glad someone understands my point.

Not only your original point, but I also get pissed off at the "

" attitude others have about it. I tell my wife I wish I could be Batman sometimes. (OK, I've been a huge fan since age 3.) But I feel no one fights for what's right and good anymore. Everyone wants to promote subjective morality. It's you're "choice" if you want to do this or that, and no one's held accountable for their actions anymore.

Yes, I am Republican. 😉

Haha, my father would adore you. You're view is much like my father's (minus the Batman portion 😉). I'm not Republican, as my father wishes, but I'm as conservative as a moderate can get. I guess you could call me a Republican in denial, but I don't like to associate with parties.

Put up a no trespassing sign "trespassers will have their domes blown out"
Keep your hand on the pump...
Then JFK any trespassers...split that wig piece

teach them a lesson
ITS MY LAWN SO STAY OFF KTHXBOOM

Yeah thats an extreme but people are getting on my nerves lately. So many stupid selfish POS out there. Woops can't say that, its their (insert stupid excuse here... if it is the 1970s insert schizophrenia, if it is the 1980s insert anxiety, if its the 1990s insert depression, if its in the 00s insert something superficial like ADD/ADHD or something else that exists but over prescribed and YOU DONT HAVE--this is a requirement to partake) diseases fault. Lets just get them some prescribed meds and they will be allllll better ok?

After meeting some really stupid people this past summer in my public service position, I feel really unsafe on the highways now. The amount of people that are given a license to drive upwards of a 6 ton truck that could fatally injure others....
Its so azz backwards its legal to drive a killing machine at 16, but nope, sorry, can't smoke weed.

I don't think you understood me quite right... my lawn isn't overgrown with weeds... there's a few dandylions here and there... some patches of crab grass... and the occasional brown spot where I suspect a dog pissed. It's almost impossible to keep weeds out of your yard around here because of the wild "field" behind the houses. I put down fertilizers and water my lawn and removed the majority of weeds. My yard looks no different than 80% of other yards in the neighborhood.

But... taking your dog for a walk, STOPPING and letting him take a dump on my lawn... that's inexcusable... I can't for the life of me figure out what is going through that person's head when they're standing there, looking at me while their dog drops a log on my grass. God forbid I should say anything to them about it... I'm an asshole if I do... and they continue to do it if I don't. It's a catch 22.
