I am just wondering -- what happened to www.mobshop.com? Did they go out of business? I was there a couple of days ago and it's like: What is this??? Any ideas? Thanks!

yeww -- mercata sucked! I guess that's why they went out of business. Mobshop was much better.

They did shut down their group buying service, but supposedly are going to continue as a technology provider, trying to sell their whole "power buy" system to other companies. They announced it about a week after Mercata announced they were quitting in either January or December, but MobShop said they'd stay open until mid-February.

Mercata and Mobshop were completely separate, all the way through to the end. One didn't buy out the other, AFAIK. They just both ended up quitting about the same time.

yeah, they are marketing this whole concept == demand aggregation. But who is going to buy into that considering they went out of business and they were doing just that -- demand aggregation???

Chrichtons Girl is right, Mobshop was never affiliated with Mercata. They (Mobshop) were a customer of my company for a while, and about 6 - 8 months ago, they were giving us a lot of business. They kept wanting to cut back on our services and they finally terminated their contract as of last month.

At least they paid all their bills to us, that's more than I can say for many of our .com customers.

The whole problem with group buying is that not all consumers want the same product at the same time. The concept in theory is awesome, but just doesn't work for higher priced items. I suppose if items were kept under $300 and bargains could be had it would be more successful. Great concept, hard to market.

Well, if they would advertise their hot deals on AnandTech, they would probably have stayed in business. I got in on some pretty awesome stuff when AnandTech members advertise them on the forum.
