Not exactly "nowadays", but since you mentioned the 80's and earlier, King's X did a lot of this throughout their entire career.
Yeah, music goes through cycles. Although some are stranger than others (rap, ska, trance) but, I look at poor current music as an opportunity to enjoy another type of awesome music from the past.
It's still around. It's still used heavily in country-folk kind of stuff. It even creeps into the occasional hit. Some examples (from big bands to small acts).

I also don't quite get all the complaints about modern music. Recording equipment has gotten good enough that anyone get a pretty good recording from their own house or a small studio. The result is that you can find music for just about any taste, as long as you're willing to dig a little.
