i heard a NPR segment about how the government has pretty much barred reporters from visiting Gitmo. i guess it all started when photos of those Chinese guys were published asking if obama was a communist. according to the NPR segment the whitehouse viewd that as a black eye and has pretty much stopped reporters and other organizations from going to Gitmo. when was the last time we had a news story from there, its been a while.

He became the politician and decided that it was in the best interest of the government to say fuck you to US laws as well as international laws.

I'm sorry but this is like when Blair was replaced by Brown, same fucking thing just a new fucking face.

I am dissapointed, i really am.

I expected him to listen to his military advisors, something GW never did, he talked down to them and let them know that he knew better.

Obviously, the politician generals are there to stay while real world data doesn't matter one fucking bit to anyone in the white house.

Same fucking deal for another eight years, i'm just glad that i don't have to be a part of it.

Frankly I think the place would be shut down by now if the mainland politicos didn't freak out at the prospect of containing a bunch of sheep herders in our SuperMax prisons over here. Not being able to move the detainees anywhere has tied his hands.

However this doesn't excuse his endorsement of the same detainment policies at Bagram and elsewhere. So, no torture, but indefinite confinement isn't exactly world's better.

whats funny is that the reporter was saying that the press had all kinds of access to gitmo under Bush, but with Obama they have been pretty much shut out...

 Glad you got out too. I believed that he would change this, I admit. I'm sad that this country was run into the ground. 9/11 was a success for the terrorists thats for sure. They played us like a fiddle.

9/11 was the politicians wet dream, the terrorists didn't cause most of the damage, not in the US and not in the fucking UK either, the politicians who took advantage of the situation by any means needed, even lying to parliment/congress and the people.

I'm out of the service but not out of trouble... hang on, you'll read about it. ;)

Well, any sane human being would, there is a difference between handling a war and starting a war on false premise.

The latter is treason and the punishment is death.

Words just words, listen to what obama says and ignore it, his actions speak louder than all 300+ speeches.

Wow, so that's the measuring stick now? All someone has to do is be better than some other previous person at the job? They don't have to do anything good, just be better than the previous person? Nice.

It's echoes what I have heard from a lot of Australian vets from the Vietnam debacle. It's amazing people still enlist for military service and are willing to risk their one life to basically promote the "phat man's" agendas, sold to them under the banner of honour, duty, freedom and democracy. Then again, it would be hard to be able to travel the world on a wal-mart pay check, but Afghanistan is a far cry from a Bavarian beer fest holiday.

I don't think that's why the majority of people join the military. I've known thousands of military members in my life and no more than a handful mentioned that as their primary motivation.

I'm not sure I believed he'd change it at all but no doubt he said he would and it looks to not close by this January which by any account means that's a promise broken.

So either Obama is weak or he was ignorant of Gitmo and once he got into office learned some special things. I am more inclined to the former.

I find it surprising, too.

BOTH of the major conflicts the US is engaged in right now (afghanistan and iraq) have been piss poorly managed and cost many lives because of this poor management. They were simply not executed properly.

Lack of transparency and honesty about Gitmo is only a problem if Bush does it. If Obama does the exact same thing or makes it even more secretive, that's perfectly fine.

Funny how that works.
