They only have to do what their users want insofar as it stops a mass exodus of users which would decrease ad revenue -- and even then, they can do what they want, if they're willing to forfeit impressions.
Free speech is our most cherished right, but it (along with the WHOLE constitution) applies to the PUBLIC sector (i.e. government organizations and their agents only).
Therefore, if the mods want to lock a topic because the poster was glorifying cat murder, they have EVERY right to.
In summary, STFU!

this is not a FREE SPEECH issue. really its not. THis is a private site. they have the right to allow whatever they want (trust me i got banned enought to prove it!).
there are other sites that will allow you to post pretty much whatever you want. find one.

Ok I know that everyone is bashing on the OP for posting about FREE SPEECH.
Everyone who's saying that there is no free speech on a privately run forum is correct. You can also be banned for whatever reason. They can make you go poof if they wanted and there's no justification necessarily. But we're all human and we have feelings. That's why we encourage a positive attitude when visiting AT forums. Whether you're a mod or just another poster you should be treating everyone with respect. I think that's what the OP is more concerned about. Locking threads is totally legal and I'm not going to challenge a mod on the authority to lock or not. It's more about the principle of locking. If you have a legitimate reason to lock threads, by all means go lock it. If you're locking threads when they really shouldn't be locked, then I can see why people will protest. It's about being fair and also respectful of others.
I think everyone here agrees that we aren't entitled to free speech here, but everyone also agrees that we SHOULD be allowed to post topics that are generally acceptable to the general public. So stop bashing on the OP so much. It's obvious his topic title was poorly worded, but I think you can all see what he means.
