What happened to Dell's "good" CRT monitors?

Dell used to have some nice Dell branded CRT's and now I go look and they don't have anything that looks any good. I have a friend with a Dell 19" CRT and it's awesome. They seemed to have replaced it with some cheap crap. Is this because of LCD's? I hope not. There are still some people out there that prefer CRT's to LCD's.

You could not be more wrong if you wanted to.

I have a Dell P1110 and it's great not a POS and it's made by SONY.

I bought a Nec FE2111SB 21" crt from Dell a few months ago and it's great. I had to return the first one and Dell gave me no hassles about it and paid for the shipping.

My friend has the 19" CRT (Can't remember the name), but it's a Trinitron. It's one of the best looking CRT's that I've ever seen. It even blew the Sony G400 away that I ended up returning because it didn't look as good. If my friend ever "upgrades" to a LCD, I'm going to jump all over that monitor.

BTW.. He just bought a Dell system for his wife and bought the 19" CRT that Dell is selling now (M something). I hardly compares to his monitor. It's just average if you ask me and after checking the Dell site, it looks like the only Dell branded CRT that Dell currently sells.

Plus.. I like working with Dell. They usually have free shipping (which can get costly with a big CRT) and if I ever have a problem with the monitor, they issue call tags to return the defective monitor. Most companies at least make you pay for return shipping.

Dell's monitors selection when ordering a computer has gone down drastically in quality. However, so has the price. Basically the last year and a half of advertising $399-$499 computers has forced Dell to skimp somewhere, and the monitor is the most obvious of their skimping.

For example, I just quickly went to Dell.com and randomly picked a home computer model. The CRT options that come up are (shipping is free for all these monitors):
17" E77c for $50,
17" M782 for $90,
19" M992 for $149, and
21" P1130 Trinitron for $630.

Since when can you build a quality 17" monitor for only $50? The dot pitch on that thing is 0.27 mm - something that would give nearly anyone a headache. It is clearly labeled as a "Value CRT" if you click on Dell's "Help Me Choose" button.

Dell used to have a full selection of mid quality monitors (their M series), and a full selection of quality monitors (their P series). Where the 17" and 19" P series have disappeared. Now if you want quality, you only get one option: the $630 21" monitor. Very few people buy a $630 monitor with a $499 computer. So the vast majority of what you see now are the midrange or value Dell monitors.

Look into a Samsung 900NF. I bought the 900NF on a hotdeal from dell a year ago as well as a P991 (They use the same tube and look very similar). Both are great monitors. I have the samsung on my comp and the dell p991 on the family rig, and they are both great, I cant tell the difference.

My old Dell M990 looks great and I've had no problem in 3+ years.
I believe that it's a different M series that they sell now. The refresh rates aren't very high on it either.

The old Dell 19" Trinitron was the P991. Thanks for the reminding me.

I'll look at the Samsung. I remember it being a very nice monitor.

The Dell P series were all rebranded Sony Trinitrons. Sony stopped production on Trintrons under 21" earlier this year, thus no more P series.

They did sell good Trinitron gutsied monitors. But as it goes, the bidness became commoditized and so manufacturers have trimmed or exited the CRT bidness altogether and thus those which remain available are either relatively craptastic or command a premium. FPD's are just becoming more cost effective to manufacture, ship and service.

In that case, there aren't going to be any more Samsung 900NF's either because they are based on the Trinitron tube as well. Looks like the only thing available under 21" is the shadow mask Hitachi based monitors. I could probably still find a 900NF, but they'll probably be a premium on them considering that they are still great monitors, but in short supply.

They have the POS rebrands and the nice ones. Much Sony in their lineup.....

Same with HP and Gateway....that's how I have an ultra cheap Hitachi Super Scan 751 sitting on my desk.

We have about 30 or so dell monitors at work, so i feel inclined to contribute 2 cents.

we have a bunch of 17 trinitrons, some older 17inchers and some 15inchers, the trinitrons are pretty reliable for the most part. Some of the older one, about 3-4 years old have dim pictures. Yea I think dell rebrands some generic monitors but they are not of poor quality.

Although they is really nothing special about them picturewise and reliability is on par with other brands.

If the price is right buy it
