What gun to purchase for home protection?

I have a 9mm SCCY CPX-2 with a laser and a Sig P250 full size (with the 9mm and .45 kits) which I eventually plan to get a laser/light combo for in the future.

Also... I saw something mentioned about wanting a gun that you can stick behind the headboard for a couple years and still expect to function if needed. Ideally, that wouldn't be a concern because you'd be shooting it several times a year at the gun range to stay sharp with it. If you're going to be a gun owner, be a responsible gun owner and not one of those people on the news that results in a new "feel good" gun law.

Yeah for Joe Schmoe it's a little overkill, still looks cool as hell though IMO. Closest thing we have to an actual Stormtrooper Rifle.

When an intruder wakes you up at 2am, and you are nervous and shaken, and hiding on the far side of your bed, good luck holding steady to hit anything with your .45 acp.

15 shots with a light (7 lbs empty) and maneuverable (26 inches total length) shotgun is probably the best weapon you could ever ask for.

Given the large number of people who have successfully defended their homes with handguns, I'd say this is a little exaggerated.
 
I'd always read the Judge revolvers were a bit over-rated myself, but have never shot one.

I'll still grab my King Cobra .357 if something comes at me first.

The problem is that it is not widely available in anything other than cowboy loads. Full power self-defense ammo can be had. Even extra hot stuff for the revolvers that can handle it (.45LC can actually be loaded to rival .44mag). But all you'll see on a local shelf is the weak ~700fps stuff. Except for maybe in one of those ridiculously overpriced 'combo packs.'

Speaking of which, it seems like people generally don't realize that, aside from .410 being a super shitty shotgun round, firing it down a rifled revolver barrel is fucking stupid. It flings the shit into a big hollow circle.

Go play Call of Duty more.

There are plenty of people here who shoot regularly (not crack shots; just well-practiced) who would be plenty comfortable defending themselves with a 9mm or .45ACP. Without getting out of bed. Handguns are simply the easiest firearm to retrieve and quickly point shoot on instinct. Which is pretty much what that type of situation is gonna be.

Shotguns work fine, too, but advocating for that dumb tacticool Kel-tec just makes you look silly.

It's also an $800 firearm that is competing with $300 Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s. Ugh, watch any review on the thing. It has some issues.

:thumbsup: Most 45LC loads are pretty weak because most people shoot these loads out of replica cowboy guns or antique cowboy guns that may or may not withstand the pressures a modern gun will easily handle.

I owned a Ruger Vaquero in 45 Long Colt. Worst gun purchase I ever made. It is a modern gun made to look like a Colt SAA so it is slow to load and unload, has shit sights and was chambered in a caliber most places don't even carry and if they do it is a weak assed round. I actually sold it a year or so later on consignment and didn't really lose much money on it thankfully.

I always thought that if I bought another wheel gun it would be a .44 Magnum and it turned out that was the next wheel gun I bought and I still own it today. 8" model 629. Love that gun. It is a keeper.

And where is your tactical shotgun when this scenario unfolds? Are you sleeping with it in your hands under the sheets? :sneaky: That sucker looks like it has a lot of sharp edges that would easily catch on bed sheets now that I think about it. :sneaky::sneaky::sneaky:
 
Pfft. I just keep alky in my closet. If someone were to break into my home I'd just shout: "Alky, come out of the closet!"

Still easier to grab a pistol out of the nightstand.

That said, my only gun that doesn't stay cased sits across the room on a shelf, with the loaded mag separate. If the three seconds it takes to grab the gun/mag and chamber a round is what results in my death, someone must've really, really wanted to kill me and I probably deserved it.
 
I have a sig x5 in 9mm with a surefire x300 attached to it at home and a sig p229 in 40sw with an x300 on it at my apartment. For most things that are likely to happen in the home, I'd take the fast handling of a pistol over a long gun. My long guns are not far away though...

I mounted a small safe in the wall that is close to my side of the bed and takes a quick pattern of button pushes to open. It is mechanical so no batteries to wear out. I keep a loaded full frame Para-Ordnance .45 ACP in there.
