What good does arguing a call do in baseball?

I was thinking about the White Sox/Angels fiasco in the 9th inning last night and wondered if the ump's call could have been reversed.

Most likely not, so what good would it do for the Angels for the manager (Mike Scoscia) to come out and argue the call? I mean, how many times has an ump reversed a call after being yelled at by a manager? What good does it do?

Manager: "That was a horrible call! You SUCK!"
Ump: "I'll do better next time." or "Y'er outta here!"

So two wrongs make a right? That doesn't make sense.

It's too bad baseball can't have instant replay, but it would slow the game down even more if it did.

I have seen calls reversed before after an argument. However it is few and far between.

it shows that the manager is sticking up for his team and although the call won't get reversed, it atleast gives the umpire a heads up and keeps the team motivated...because it's obvious that some of these umpires suck and they need an earful once in a while.

I saw a call reversed during a Mets game years ago, when Bobby Valentine was managing them. He argued for about 10 minutes, calmly, and they changed it. I don't remember the particulars, though. The Mets probably lost anyway.
