What golf clubs should I buy?

Now that I'm totally done with my baseball career I would like to start getting into golf. I have always enjoyed playing but never got at all serious about it because I was afraid it would mess up my baseball swing. Now that is not a concern so I have to move onto something else.

I want to get a good set of clubs, not something too expensive because I dont know how much I'm going to play nor if I will ever be good at it, but I also want them to last awhile. I'm 6'4" so will a regular set work for me or do I need to get a custom job, extensions, etc?

Not sure exactly how much I want to spend, I would say between $300-500 for the clubs alone, I'll worry about the other major expenses at a later time.

I just got my Taylormade Super Steel Burners today... Check it out here

I got them from Sports Authority.com which ended up being a great deal because it was free shipping and no tax... Which on $400 clubs saved me a pretty penny... 🙂

Hope this helps!

thanks aphex, your thread about your clubs actually inspired me to start looking!

i would imagine that for my first set the qualities ill be looking for should be forgiveness and accuracy more than how far the shot will go.

haha cool 🙂

If your just getting started, check out Top Flight XL2000.... Ive heard FANTASTIC things about them... Extremely forgiving clubs with a huge sweet spot.

nice recommend aphex, taken from that site you sent me to:

Of the testers who used the XL 2000?s, two are of particular interest. One eighteen-year old is our least talented tester. Matt is a big, strong kid with extensive baseball experience. He is a raw hacker when it comes to golf. He likes to pound golf balls here at the range, but that?s about it. Hitting woods has always been enjoyable, but the art of irons playing had almost completely eluded him. We set him up with the XL?s to see how they would do as beginners? clubs. Bingo. He was soon hitting 5-irons to the 200 pin. Not long afterwards, to the 215 pin

that describes me exactly, except im 21

I believe the golf swing wrecks the baseball swing, but that's just me. Start at golfreview.com. I use Mizuno T-Zoid Sures ($399 + tax, cheaper on eBay) because I really had a hard time hitting them anything but straight on the range. Distance was also good on mishits. The Wilson Fat Shafts (discontinued, I hear- $350ish) also are really hard to not hit straight. Since you haven't revealed your skill level, I'm pointing out irons that allow you drink 1 beer per hole and still score reasonably well. At Golfsmith, you can pick up some knock-off clubs for a really good price. Being over 6 feet tall, you're strong enough to whip a golf club around so get steel shafts as opposed to graphite. They'll be more accurate and you won't lose any club head speed with your size. Golfsmith.com has good prices on both pro-line sets and build-your-own.

edit:
ugghh, very important - the easier to hit, cavity-back clubs have little 1/4 to 1/2 swing feel; your short game will suffer without a decent flop-wedge and/or utility wedge. Before I purchased, I also hit an older version of the TopFlites mentioned. I could hit them a country mile, but off-center hits flew ALOT less than on-center hits. My swing speed with a driver is 112 - 117mph and I could pound the TopFlite 5-iron about 215ish. Miss the sweet-spot and pay the price.

thanks daclayman, i agree with you on the baseball swing stance. which is why i havent gotten into it until just now. my skill level is low, call me a fresh new beginner. i had heard the same thing about graphite shafts and so i think i will be leaning towards steel as you suggest
