What golf ball do you play and how good are you?

I just started golfing this year and have stepped up from shooting 73 in 9 (first round ever) to about a 50 per 9 avg, with a 47 being my current best, although I still have maybe 12rounds total under my belt.

I am playing with some pretty decent clubs my dad gave me.
The Wedges (L,S) are Callaway Hawkeyes
The Irons (6-P) are Callaway Big Bertha Golds
The Hybrids (3,4,5) are Callaway FT's
The Woods (3,5) are Callaway ERC Fusions
The Driver is a Callaway FTi

I also was originally using a pile of old balls he left me which were a scattered sort of balls he found but didnt use (he plays Callaway Tour iX's.. wonder what brand he prefers..) I promptly lost a bunch of them as I have been playing, and now I am not losing nearly as many, but I find the balls he left me are a bit more banged/bruised than I should play, so it is time for new balls.

Originally he got me a bunch of Noodle Longest and Noodle Long and Soft's as well, but after a week solid of vacation golfing on some amazingly difficult courses I have lost or beaten up most of them, and I need to buy new ones.

I kind of like the Noodle, and am thinking about the Noodle+ Long and Soft or getting some older Noodle Ice's, but I feel like I am getting to the point where I might want to think about some better balls than 1$/ball noodles.

So I want to know, how good are you and what kind of ball do you prefer to play? If you were me what would you buy?

With balls ranging from 50 cents to 5.00 bucks this is a pretty loaded question.

p.s. If you think golfing sucks, go away. Thanks in advance.

i suck

i play whatever is in my bag that isn't old and shitty

i shot a 41 for 9 on Friday with a double on 1 though.

(waits patiently for the resident golf dick to some in and say something about not being able to believe golf chat on the interwebs  )

Shooting 41 on 9 isnt bad at all.

i play with whatever is the cheapest I can find before I go out for a round. i'm not good enough to where the ball really matters heh.

Golfers are certifiably insane. Injecting millions of dollars into the "sport" doesn't change the fact that most golfers don't know when to come in out of the rain.

I like the Titlest Pro-V and shoot mid 80s. However, I will play with whatever I grab out of the bag and I'm still fairly consistent scoring. The ball will make a difference only to those that are able to play a wide array of shots and spin it on demand in my experience/opinion.

neither is the OP. Just get whatever falls in your price range since you will see very little (if any) difference based on your current scores.

pro V1 or bridgestone 330

Both work very well, decent off the tee, can get a ton of spin and are soft putting/around the greens.

I'm a decent golfer, but that's about it shooting in the low/mid 80s. However there are times when I need to spin a ball or work the shot a certain way and prefer a softer feel, the pro V1 and 330 give me that.

I've been using Pinnacle Gold FX Soft (~$18 for 15).

I'm the most erratic golfer on the planet. On my best days I can shoot in the low 80's. On a really bad day I can easily shoot over 100. But I'm also a real stickler for the rules, which can occasionally lead me to a really high score on a hole.

Get a high distance, super stiff, ball. You dont want too much spin given your skill level ( exactly where I am right now). I have some Top-Flight XLs and i recently found some Wilson Distance balls at Sports Authority at 36 for $14. I think I'm welll stocked on balls for the time being.

I just started, shot a 61 on my first 9 holes on a real course then got 130 on 18 (on a harder course) on my second outting. I really suck with the drivers so it takes me almost par just to get the damn ball on the green. Luckily my wedge and putting are pretty good (had 4 wedge hits that landed within 4 feet of the hole on the 18 hole course)

He could always try the MC lady's. Low compression ball with very little spin.

yeah although i think most people have a stigma against using lady's equipment, such as super flexy clubs etc

I really like the Bridgestone E5+ this season...

Whatever you play, try to play the same ball... should help with consistency...

i shoot in the 120-130 range and i will not buy really nice balls until my score gets under 100....i usually go to walmart or meijer and buy those slightly used balls for $10 for 24 balls

This is pretty subjective. How good you are at golf depends on a lot of things.

Go out and buy a 3 pack of a bunch of different brands of balls and see how you do with each one.

If you swing slowly, just get any 2 piece... if you swing fast, a 3 piece. The more detailed portions of golf balls are not needed for you atm.

They make a version called the "Laddie" I think too.

I can't stand flexible clubs. I have a very whippy graphite shaft driver and it always seems like I'm halfway through my followthrough when I feel contact with the ball.

I'm a jr. golfer so that means I play anything that people will give me or I can find...haven't paid for golf balls for almost a year

that being said my favorite to play are Pro V1x or Bridgestone E6s or HX Tour 56 when I find one of those I'm prtty stoked

I'm a mid to low 80's golfer

depends on your shot type imo, i have a strong slice, so i perfer a ball that tends to spin less.

edit: in general i would recommend balls with less spin. I would recommend trying some out, picking one and sticking with it for a while.

handicap is about 25 atm, but i've worked at golf courses for most of the last 5 years so i know more that my skill level indicates

I'm much more into golf course architecture than I'm into keeping up with the latest equipment.

Then you need to get the Microsoft Links 2003 golf sim which includes the Arnold Palmer Course Designer 3D cad program. It is a superb program for building golf courses to be used in the game.
In fact Mike Jones a guy who uses the program to design courses for the game has proven to be so good with his use of the APCD that Greg Norman's golf design firm has Jones build courses first
in the APCD for presentation.

I suppose I can take the advice of most here and just find a decently priced ball I am comfortable with which at the moment is the Noodle. I opted to get 72 Noodle Ice's (White) for 55 shipped (.76/ball), which will last for a while. Later I can move up to something once my swing comes around more. I think the next step along the way might end up being Bridgestone's E6+ since I played one pretty well at Mauna Lani (hit the pin for a near eagle, but settled for Birdie on a Par 4), and those are only about 1.25/ball which isnt bad. I did notice Target sells refurbished Pro-V1's for around 2/ball which seemed like a good deal. Apparently they replace the cover on them using old cores, basically making them identical to a new ball.
