What gfx card for 1440p for $200-$300

Hey guys,

Wifey gave me the go on building a new rig, so we are upgraing from a 22" TN 1050 res monitor to a 27" monoprice 1440p ips panel.

My question is this:
I game, and I need a new graphics card that will have enough juice to get up to 1440p (dont need all settings maxed).

My budget is $200-$300. Would the 280x be the best option here?

For $300 The 280x is probably the better choice. Snag a holiday sale and may get it a little less in price.

The 7970 3GB supply has finally dried up, so I agree with Skott that an R9 280X is the best idea at $300. Anything less than that price point will have trouble keeping up with a 1440p display. However, the R9 280X seems to be out of stock at Newegg and Amazon. The GTX 770 isn't quite as good of a value, but you can, ya know, actually buy it.

If you haven't looked at AnandTech's front page lately, Ryan Smith agrees with the 280X:

Ryan Smith said:
The only real downside to this card right now is that gamers are going to have to compete with crypto coin miners to get one, as the recent run-up of cryto coin prices has induced a bit of tulip mania that has led to 280X cards being snatched up due to their combination of high performance and low prices. Unless this abates in the next couple of weeks, the runner-up GTX 770 may be the only thing actually available at this performance band.

So give me some info on this resolution stuff. I use a 1980 by 1080 resolution which my ASUS 22" seems to be locked at. It seems to be very good and it's an LED display.

I thought 1440 was old? So why would it be popular on a 27" monitor which should have a larger resolution?

In 1440p, 1440 is the height. The width is 2160px.

Not to be confused with 4k, where the width is 3840px. 🙄
