i have an:

AMD 64 4000+
1 GB PC3200
ps 380 watt

i want to play cod4, battlefield 3 and crysis. i figure if i can get my system to play crysis then i know i can play most of the other games.

i don't have a graphics card right now. i posted a thread in the video card section about what kind of graphics card i should get. i'm just concerned that my system might be kind of old.

what are some fun games i can play if i had a geforce 8600 gt?

Well you should tell us about your video card, but you might want to look into a dual core and 2GB of RAM to play those games though it can be done (you still meet minimum requirements).

I just can't wait for the legions of guys unsatisfied with their GTX 280s telling you your computer sucks and you should just buy a new one altogether, it's fun how people ignore the question and instead just choose to make fun of the person's system.

In all honesty, if his video card follows suit with his system, then that's absolutely the best advice. Any of the games he wants to play will spank his system soundly. That said, I would just go to System Requirements Lab and browse through the list of games and check to see how your computer stacks up to min/req specs.

For the price, that's not a bad idea. Should definitely give you a boost. However, I'd still recommend you at least upgrade that RAM to 2GB. Even with that card, you're going to get bottle necked a bit by your CPU/RAM. You also might want to look into your PSU to make sure it can handle that card/everything else running. A generic 380 watt might be.. eh.. I'm not sure.

If his system is PCIe, then he'll need a new video card and RAM at a minimum in order to keep his head above water, so to speak. But only just barely. I wouldn't bother with a new CPU just yet. If you must upgrade, go with a cheapish video card and some extra RAM, then stall until after Nehalem and Deneb have saturated the market.

Without knowing what video card you currently have, its almost impossible to point you to games though. I'd imagine you could play most Source based titles, plus most RTS games without too much trouble. SupCom might be possible at lower res and details, but even medium sized battles will bog you down.

I dont understand why some ppl would say get the videocard that's suited for your system.

That is just WRONG!. get the best valued video card for your system. PERIOD!
that way when you upgrade down the road, your video card wont be worthless/useless.

DO NOT GET 8600GT. with little bit more money you can get 8800s or 9600gt which will give you MUCH better performance.

also 9600gt wont need too much power and runs cool so it should be great. and ram is cheap, just get the video card first (or together with ram if it is cheap) and you can get more ram if you dont like how it performs.
I also think you should get 1.5gb or more :)

hmmm.. that is even slower than 8600gt. do your search on 9600gt and it will give you the best results. I think there was one under $100.
I have 8800gs that I o/c the crap out of, and it runs crysis well and every game I throw at it. But 9600gt is in same price range and has a bit more memory, should give you similar results.

i admit the 9600 gt looks really nice. but it is quite a price jump for me. the 8600 gt i wanted is $40 after mail in rebate and the $10 discount from newegg

what games will i be able to play with the 8600 gt vs 9600 gt?

wouldn't my system bottle neck that 9600 gt? i probably wouldn't be able to get ram after i get that 9600

First like others have said, Crysis will not like 1gb at all. but it will run. and ram is cheap so you should be able to hold out on that for a bit.

As far as the video card, if you get underpowered videocard like 8600gt you will NOT be able to play crysis the way it should be. You'll have to tone down so much stuff it just becomes something like Farcry. It does have few interesting gameplay but the main enjoyment would be the WOW factor from graphics which I enjoyed quite alot.

I would suggest that you hold out so you can get at least 9600gt or better. That way you will be able to play games you want.

here is a 9600gt $90 after rebate and no tax free shipping.
http://www.buy.com/prod/207383649.html
and this http://www.buy.com/retail/coupon.asp?prid=80231737 would give 8% off your purchase which would bring it down to $80!

god damn.. I purchased 8800gs for $120 -___-;

wow, looks great. nice card. but i have two concerns.

one is will my ps 380 watt be able to handle it.
and the second is people in the reviews said it runs super hot and it locks up their system.

Ha, great choice on the case/power supply . i have the same!! its a quality power supply and not a crappy smart power. it will definatly handle 9600gt w/o problem.

my spec is c2d 2160@3ghz + 2 500gb hdds + 2gb ram + dvd-rw + 8800gs o/ced . It ran every game well on 22" @ 1680x1024.

search around on hot deals and you'll find other deals as well. 8800gt would be ideal around $100 but 9600gt and 8800gs is good under $90 and you would get similar performance.

good luck with it.

OH, if you dont mind getting something used, check our trade section and you might be able to get a good deal on one there too.

The 8600 is OK and a good deal, but realistically you wont be able to play many games with it.

Even the lowest of the 8800 series is much more powerful and not too much more expensive. Get one of those instead and only games like Crysis will make it lurch, and only then on max detail.

To hell with the 8600.

I just bought an 8800gs last weekend for $70 after rebate (but I had to pay CA tax) and this weekend the price dropped $10. If you do not have to pay tax then you are looking at less than $60 shipped after rebate. I have also had good experiences with eVGA rebates, they take about a month to arrive.

As far as the card itself:
55 fps average framerate in crysis benchmark at 1280x1024 and medium settings and 29 fps average at the same resolution but high settings. Looking online, the benchmark results or more or less the same, and OC'ing the card gives a nice boost, making Crysis more than playable at 1280x1024 and high settings.
