This has gone kind of off-topic, but you can find some solid stuff at Ikea. I've had this desk for almost five years now and it's still great, especially for $80 or whatever.

you get what you pay for at ikea. the cheap stuff is fine for a while, but does start to fall apart.

what region are you in?

I bought my living room set at Raymour and Flannigan 2 years ago and haven't had any issues with it or them whatsoever... assuming I move this summer, I'll probably go back there for a new bedroom set and kitchen furniture for my new place.

I guess that they don't have a Bob's Discount Furniture around where you live.

Trust me... if you did, you would know. They plaster the airwaves with commercials!

Some Ikea may be good but solid wood or not there is only so good a piece of furniture can be if you're breaking out the screw driver and assembling it!

Crochester, NY. We're going to check out a place here that isn't a chain and see what's what.

I got my bedroom set from American Signature Furniture.

It's solid with a lifetime warranty.

Solid stuff that weighs a ton.

The whole set cost about $2k.

King size bed, two night stands, two kinds of dressers and a cushioned bench for the foot of the bed.

I looked at every single possible furniture place I could before deciding on them and have no regrets.

IKEA for some stuff, also West Elm, Crate & Barrel and CB2. Pottery Barn maybe if that's your style.

This. Raymour and Flanigan if you are in the northeast.

http://www.raymourflanigan.com/

Raymour and Flanigan is $$$.

The only way I know of to do it on the cheap and with good quality stuff is to just be patient with craigslist. It's taken me a long time to furnish my house, but I have nice stuff (stainless range + convection oven, nice sofa, solid maple bedroom set) for about a third to a half what I would have paid new. Frankly, I couldn't have afforded the stuff new.

And I agree with the OP, Ikea is shit.

Now I just need to figure out how to get a Persian rug for the living room for not too much money. CL has been really frustrating on that front.

it's more expensive than Ikea of random craigslist finds, but it's nowhere near Ethan Allen or Crate and Barrel.

plus, they've always got like 2 years w/ no interest... spending a couple grand isn't so bad when you can pay it off a few hundred a month.

Hmm, I've always put them in the same category as as EA and C&B, taking another look at their website, maybe I'm wrong. The couches seem a bit cheaper.

The quality of stuff at Lacks, Furniture Row, Ashley's isnt that much above Ikea and costs 2-3x's as much, unless you are going for their "high end" stuff and it is okay quality. Most of the mega chain furniture stores that aren't high end have shitty furniture. Stay away from Ashley's, there a more complaints about them than seemingly any other major chain.

Jordan's furniture in MA is pretty good. The owner has a cool old man ponytail, and the shop is damn fun to go to. If you get sick of looking at the ridiculous amounts of furniture, go see an imax movie, get wicked cheap ice cream, or watch the a pretty good laser light/fountain show. Fun for the whole family. Who da thunk it?

COME ON DOWN!

God I would try to avoid that place with a passion. I've seen couches from there rip down the seems within two years of buying them. There's a place in RI and probably a few others around that advertise in local papers. They're basically warehouses that bought a ton of surplus stuff and sell it pretty cheap. I got a queen size bed for like $150

One word: Amish.

Some of my friends have told me about this as well. If there is an amish area in your state, it may be worth checking out, hand crafted beautiful furniture for ridiculously low prices. The guy I knew that bought a kitchen table from an Amish area said they had to bring it out to him while he had his truck parked on the road because they didn't allow him to drive up the truck to their main compound.
