You can use either Photoshop ( www.adobe.com )trial version which may or may not expire after 30 days (i can't remember) or Paint Shop Pro ( www.jasc.com ) but however if you're going for just simple crop and resize, try an image viewer/organizer called ACDsee ( www.acdsee.com ) which is also a trial software but continues to work after trial period has come and gone. It's a great viewer and worth every penny (15-30 dollars).

ifranview 3.75 make sure you download all_plugins.exe....so it retains EXIF info. The old versions didn't have that nor did they have lossless jpeg rotation. But now it does. I used to use PIE it was $15 or something like that. I forgot but now irfranview can do it all ...batch resizing thousands of pics, etc. I've tried many free image editors that have layers, text-editing so I don't need to install photoshop, photoimpact, paintshop, etc. But the ones I've tried I just couldn't get to like. So for adding quick text to an image I'll just use irfanview.

I asked this question in the Off Topic forum and was told Thumbs Plus was a good choice for easy image retouching.

Unfortunately, where it lacks is that it didn't have pre-built "templates" for any of the popular photo papers, so it's not a complete solution if you also need printing. I haven't played with it much, but for everything else it seems reasonable.

You said free, so I would go with infraview 3.75. It's an awesome program. I have ACDsee 4.0 but, thats just an image browser with an add-on editor. I still use Iview all the time it's simple, free, and very extensive in it's capabilities. You can't go wrong.

another app you might find interesting for your digital pictures. DCEnhancer is used to edit all sorts of things in your pics. I can't remember where I got it. wait I just found it. try this link

Hope these help you.
