What free antivirus do you use?

I've been using mcafee for many years now, but it's always irking how they come out with a new version every few months or so. Any recommendations of free antivirus software/scanners I can use to save some money?

Just because everyone fails to mention it, Bitdefender 7 has a free edition. It doesn't provide realtime protection but as a scanner I think it's better than anything listed here.

AVG here...yeah some popups...but they remind me it's updating almost daily.

I haven't tried it, but antivir supposedly is more a system drain than AVG.

I know my AVG is way better than Norton 2002.

Whoever supposedly told you that is decidedly wrong. One look at the difference in the GUI between the two should tell you that.

And yes, the free AV sweets out there pound Norton and McAffee in the out hole.

The GUI? (I know what a GUI is)...you have benchmarks I suppose. Let me know.

I hope you are talking about AVG vs Antivir and not Norton.

I know the thread was alread mentioned, but Schadenfroh's Consolidated Security Thread lists the system resources used for many.

All of these are at the default settings and they are a bit dated as i stated before.
In megabytes, personal edition. (or likeness there of unless noted otherwise)

AVG 6 Free Edition: 9.768
F-Prot: 10.244
Antivir free: 12.892
NOD32: 14.216
eTrust: 19.828
Kaspersky: 22.984
BitDefender 7: 24.444
Panda Titanium: 29.144
aVast Free: 30.112
Nortan [sic] Antivirus: 32.516
McAfee: 34.064

AVG and Antivir, at least at the time those were taken, were close enough together to worry about. So, which one of the two actually works best?
