I tried Metro Exodus again. Last time I got stuck trying to operate the train radio. The game basically ignored all keyboard commands that are supposed to control the radio and I ended sitting there for a half hour trying to get the game to respond. The game doesn't freeze, it just ignores all keyboard input. People talk and I can use the mouse to look around but no advancement because it ignores key clicks. It knows the keyboard is there because it recognizes the escape key to go to the menus. The game worked fine until I got to the radio. Today, I finally got the radio to response and advanced the game by about two minutes and then got stuck at the map, same shit. If the game is a Russian plot to piss off Americans, it's working.

Monday, water on the floor by the small dorm fridge I keep in the back. The freezer/coils are in the top and had accumulated so much ice that it cracked the door open. Granted, its been years since I defrosted it. Took 5 or 6 hours but got all of the ice. Now that the coils aren't covered, my apples, yogurt and condiments are frozen.

I've had a savings account with the same bank for almost two decades. I noticed that they have a "new" savings account available that is paying 4% higher interest than the one I have. Looking at the terms and conditions side-by-side they are literally the exact same account except for the new name and the interest rate. So I contact the bank. "Do I really have to close the old account and open a new one to get the better rate?" "Yep." <click, click, click, done> Banks be dumb.

People are lazy and may not make the effort. Had the same happen. Told my banker that it looks like a class action suit...lower my rate when rates drop but don't raise mine when they go up. Asked her what she thought the CFPB might think....she raised my rate.

My gaming machine seems to be on it's last legs, every now and then I get a boot error that it can't find the drive. Now there's no more mouse. The SSD is a OCZ Vertex 3 which is probably the first SSD I ever bought, and they were known to have issues so think it's finally happening. This setup is a pita to troubleshoot because my machines are in the basement. I really need to rethink that setup and find a way to have the machines in the office. The problem is physical space, there's just nowhere in here to put them. But the way it is now it makes troubleshooting or even installing a new OS a huge pita because I'm constantly running up and down the stairs. Getting into the bios is no fun either...

I want to eventually move my office to the cat room which is bigger, then I might have room for a small rack next to my desk and I can put the workstations in there. Going to be a lot of work to move all that though, that's not something I'm looking forward to.

I didn't wear my longer jeans when I rode my motorcycle to work today so my calves got slightly cold.

took my car to get its annual state inspection and the shop wasn't doing inspections for the 2nd day in a row. no inspection for me! another trip wasted.

fun fact: some states mandate an annual inspection of your vehicle as a prerequisite for registration, others don't

Glad they don't require inspections here, I'm pretty sure most vehicles would fail lol. Obviously unsafe vehicles should be taken care of but as long as parts are not falling off they need to leave people alone especially in this economy.

Comcast just came in and told staff they're going to be down from 7-11pst so we won't have phones, cc payments or internet. We're going to have some pissed off customers in the morning, have to reschedule some video calls, or use our personal cells to join in, and I can't do grant research. May just take the morning off...

You must have very little writes for that SSD to start failing now. Mine got to 5% remaining life after about just one year of internet browsing. Is that like a 15 year old gaming PC?

As somebody who does a LOT of internet browsing on the same PC he plays games with, I gotta ask... were you also maybe bitcoin mining or something? Because damn.

I was using the OCZ Vertex. It was only 30GB (cost me roughly $190) in size so despite being MLC NAND, the endurance wasn't that high and I also suspect that the OCZ firmware was pretty bad with a really high write amplification factor, something like 1:15 or something. So it was just normal use on my side but that SSD was early bad stuff.

There was ... a leak.
You do know that there are horror stories about robot surgery? A lot of young surgeons are ill trained to work with them and actually end up doing more damage to patients. And even if the surgeon is the best, the chances of even a mm off the target due to mechanical failure could rupture the wrong thing.

got done with work earlier than usual, but gotta stay at the office waiting for my pixel 8 pro and pixel 2 watch to be delivered here. I can hang with my dog and do some extra work at least.

The PC itself is newer, since when I retired my mining rig I ended up using the components for it including the GPU. The components before were not that old either but I just kept using the same SSD going between machines. I always make sure to turn off auto defrag and do other things on SSDs to make sure they don't get too much writes. The bulk of my data is also on my NAS so in general this machine doesn't have much data on it and no backup jobs or anything like that. I tend to only turn it on as needed as well so it's off half the time. Although I recently checked and I'm surprised it only idles at 100w, I figured it would be much higher since there's a 1070TI in there.

I finally managed to get the mouse and keyboard to work again after lots of fiddling around and going up and down, trying different USB ports etc to force the OS to reinitialize it, but who knows how long this will last so I do need to start thinking about upgrading that machine. SSDs have gotten so cheap now so I'll just buy a 1TB SSD and put it in, and also put windows 10. Doing a brand new PC build could be fun too I have not done that in a long time. At that point I'd do a M.2 drive.

I needed a filter for my humidifier so I looked on Amazon. Amazon said the filters were available with free next day delivery. I put two in my cart since I figured I would need a second filter eventually. Went to check out and the delivery date was next week and I couldn't get next day delivery. Spent tons of time putzing around the site trying to get next day delivery only to discover there was only one filter available for next day. So I had to place two orders. One for a single next day filter, the other for a second filter further out.

My Microwave is toast. It was a GE, 7 years old. It keeps tripping the breaker when I turn it on. Not sure how a microwave, which is no moving parts and has just one function, all of a sudden just dies.

When I was a kid, we bought a (Westinghouse?) cheap microwave. It wasn't very common where I lived so my parents put it in the drawing room and would show their friends how it worked by warming a glass of water. It died within a few days. Was back to working after some expensive repair. They stopped showing how it worked to friends and put it in the kitchen to do actual work.
