I haven't used QGIS in a while, but I'll throw it on my laptop at some point today and see what I can find. So your problem is that you can't display both raster and vector data at the same time? I know you can do that. What formats are the raster and vector data in?

F***ing Asus. This is the second time I've had a problem with one of their sh**ty AMx boards. Don't send sh** out if it's only going to work for a few hours and die. I guess no one burn tests any more.

So now I have to wait on an rma to get my money back. In the meantime the egg was out of stock on every AM4 mATX board so I had to wait for them to get stock in. If I'm lucky I might have the new board by Wednesday.

I wanted to have this new build up and running days ago. Plus the Asus board wouldn't recognize the NVMe card w/o drivers but it seems as if I need to have the OS installed before I can install the drivers since they only seem to come in a self-extracting exe file and it looks like that just contains parts that need to be assembled into the actual driver files. Also didn't recognize any of the USB ports. I hope the Gigabyte board is a little better.

Sucks. Asus used to be the Cadillac of boards too.

On subject of mapping software, has anyone played with Open Street Map APIs like Leaflet? Thinking of having a map interface built into a web based program I'm writing but I want it fairly self contained, so it would also run a tile server. Though I might make that up to the user, from quick reading it seems all that is fairly standardized so it's just the thing of having an option to point to a tile server of choice. I think?

FWP for today, is that my 4 day weekend was just not long enough. It's my last day off until I go on day shifts and I feel myself scrambling to finish stuff. Does not help I spent two days working on a computer. I got it all fixed and cleaned up so it's ready to go. Been trying to cook more rather than eat take out all the time and I have all the stuff I need for a recipe and I NEED to finish it today as some of the stuff is going to start going bad and I work 5 days so it will sit at least another 5 days if I don't do it today. I just want to sit and veg but can't. I don't even know where the time went really, this 4 days just zoomed right by.

I played around with it for like 20 minutes as a proof of concept thing. James Fee loves it though.

For the old map I've tried jpeg2000 and pdf. I'm not sure what the gis database uses, but it was created using Qgis. I'm assuming it's vector data of some sort. Otherwise, scaling would be an issue, and I'd think querying features would be difficult. But I know nothing about it.

edit:
This is the old map in question...

https://www.loc.gov/item/2002624008/

I'm really only linking it to point it out as a resource for others. The Library of Congress has some cool old maps stored away, and freely available digitally. It's fun looking over old maps to see how things have changed. I also have a bunch of USGS quad sheets going back to the 19th century.

Remember kids, yesterday was better than today, and today is better than tomorrow :^D

Well, unless they have spatial references, the JPEG and PDF won't show up under the vector data because the software doesn't know how to project them. If you load the PDF up in Acrobat, can you use the Geo tools to show the coordinates and measure stuff?

I don't have the software here to see what I did, but I pressed some combination of buttons to reference it to nad83.

Like I said, My activity has been pretty unstructured. I've never used the software before, and no one in the office has either. I work with a bunch of dummies. The boss lives in the moment, and only knows what he's specifically been shown. He wants what he wants now, and thinking of better ways to do things doesn't even come to mind; adhd boy.

The draftsman knows what he knows, and if he doesn't know it, it doesn't exist. I've given up trying to explain anything technical to him. He'll tell me something related autocad, and I'll think "That doesn't sound right"(simply based on what a competent dev would do, and sane software design), then look it up, and find the correct answer. I know absolutely nothing about autocad, and I can intuit proper behavior. Him? Nope, can't be done.

The engineer is old and scared. He does good engineering work, but I think he'd be most comfortable with a sliderule and pencil. Like the draftsman, he knows what he knows on the computer, but he's willing and eager to learn if someone will show him. He's afraid of breaking stuff, so he won't try new things on his own.

All this is a long winded way of saying I'm on my own, and can't ask anyone for help. I can't even get a good answer of what would be a useful thing to have. Between the boss not thinking ahead, the draftsman saying it doesn't exist, and the engineer being afraid. I try to guess what's good, and try to make it happen. For me? All I need is my hp48 with a cogo program, and my gnu/linux desktop. I can do everything I need to do :^D

I know how to do it in ArcMap (Georeference toolbox) but I've never used Qgis. Playing with that map in Google Earth shows how many of the rivers and shorelines have moved, always helpful. ;)

I bet all kinds of stuff has moved around over the years :^D

I think Harry Homeowner would be shocked at how imprecise land divisions are. It would be interesting to see how many millions of acres are incorrectly accounted for across the country.

I recall reading something to the effect that Austalia (and probably other places) need to actually re-do any hard written GPS coordinates of locations because of the ground movement. Ex: if a record shows something at a specific set of coords, they need to be updated because they change over time.

I just meant outright error, and imprecision being carried forward from survey to survey. The ground certainly moves, and it's especially stunning in the z axis. The ground in some places has sunk tens of meters due to the removal of water.

Oh yea for sure I'm sure there can be lot of errors too. Civilian GPS is also not very accurate. It's ok to know if you are within a genera area, but not ok for plotting property lines etc. So if a record is made using that it is probably not accurate.

Went through their RMA process with a video card. Never again. Ended up selling that piece of junk on ebay.

I hate dental appointments. It's the picking I hate the most. It just feels like it's never going to end and gums and mouth hurts so much after. The brushing is not that pleasent but at least it's not more than a minute.

I'm always paranoid they break my fillings, they scrape down pretty hard.

Apparently I have have a couple feral kitties around my property. Yesterday evening I saw one eat a bit of the cereal I put out for the birds, and today one was curled up on my back step with its partner nearby. It's awfully cold out for kitties. They look young; maybe a four months old, and skinny, but not starving skinny. I put some cat food out for them. They didn't like me much, but they dug the food. Something else to worry about...

I might make a cat house, and put it up on the hill. More for a fun project than anything. If I do that, I'll make it out of bamboo. I can get a bunch of that at work. Make a nice tropical hut so the critters can get out of the weather.

I am sick of eating leftover but I do not want to cook and I don't want to go out to pick anything up and I don't want to do any delivery. WWJD.

I want a sexy Genie to snap her head and make me a feast in an instant.

I want to buy a new Lifecycle but Life Fitness refuses to update their ancient C3 models with something for this decade. Oooh, an iPod dock, fancy!

Seriously though...how awful :(

http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/14/14927234/hoverboard-fire-death-toddler-harrisburg-pa

On the flip side, the newer ones are UL-certified (supposedly safer) & off-road capable. The Jetson V8 model dropped down to $389:

https://www.amazon.com/Jetson-Balancing-Scooter-All-Terrain-Speakers/dp/B01JUB7H3M

Actually now that you mention it I think this one should be safe, it does have the UL certification on it. I think it's this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Powerboard-H...629676&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=hoverboard&psc=1

Except it does not have that logo on the side. The adapter is also not UL rated but I opened it up and it looks like a half decent SMPS, basic design, nothing super high end but nothing scary either. Only thing it should really have better thermals and an auto shut off. Instructions say to charge for 2 hours and not longer, which seems to indicate it has no way to regulate the charge, which seems odd to me. Or maybe that limit is just due to the thermals of the adapter.

What sucks is my sister bought it from a place near Toronto, you'd think it would be a legit store given they're in Canada and not just some fly by night online shop. Well they vanished, so she could not get support. Basically the tip of the adapter broke and it was some oddball 3 pin plug. So I just replaced both the socket and plug with a standard barrel one.

I tried it myself in my living room, it's a bit tricky to maneuver but I was starting to get the hang of it. Probalby better in a larger open area. It's decently powerful too, I went a little too close to the wall and it actually took a chunk of baseboard paint off. Was not even going fast, it just had enough torque to keep going through it. Oops.

Flew into Vegas and had to do a damn go around because I forgot to disengage the auto throttle.

Of Course this was in the Sim.
