I started a freaking bad cold, and it's my week off. Talk about ruining vacation time. If it happened during work at least I could call in sick but instead I'll just be wasting vacation time dealing with this.

Took me an extra 20 mins into work this morning not because of the minor fender bender and one police car with lights flashing in the median of the LIE, but because of the 54,000 rubberneckers who think they may be seeing the Pope step out from behind the wheel if they stop and stare. I wish these people would somehow vanish from this planet.

My car is in the shop, so I was going to have to walk 45 minutes to work. Boss got a company car to my place so I wouldn't have to walk, but he woke me up 30 minutes early.

A couple months ago I was commuting home from work as usual and came upon a traffic slowdown (nearly stop and go) just before my exit home. Turns out these fucking mouth breathers had slowed to a crawl because of an accident ON THE OTHER SIDE of the freeway, across the big grassy median. There was a cop car and the two cars involved in the accident, all on the other side of the freeway on the shoulder. I don't get it.

The last power bill was $225. The wife has me call the hvac guy. He says what I expect, "It's hot." And the temp in the house is staying at ~73. The new power bill is $335. The wife has me call the hvac guy. He says, "It's hot." And the temp in the house is ~73. He's coming by in the AM so I can pay him for a service call ($85) and convince the wife "It's hot."

at some point, wouldn't it just be worth investing in a window unit for whatever room she's in most, to chill it down to icebox levels without running your overall electric bill to cool the whole house into the stratosphere?

Yep. Once I actually got to the scene of the accident, I noticed the other side was also crawling as they drove by.

I fixed the sputtering/rough idling problem on my vehicle over the weekend and now the driver side locking part is making funky grinning noise and the power window on the same panel is acting up too. This problem will require a trip to the dealer this coming weekend. More money down the drain.

We had one for a while upstairs but, overall, it seemed to work better with out it. PITA to insulate around it well. I think her personal summers are part of the problem....:sneaky:

In laws went with windows for their living and bed rooms and they're working great. Both of those were additions (30x20 and 20x20) but the construction should help keep it cool. Sheetrock/insulation/cinder block/ brick veneer.

attn printer makers:
paper comes in these things called reams. reams are 500 pages. but your trays are well under 500 pages. often 250 or (gasp!) 100 pages. this leads to a problem with open reams of paper laying about waiting to be used. stop making printers with trays of less than 500 pages so i don't have an open ream of paper cluttering up my office.

(but then how would they upsell you a 'high capacity' tray for $150 after you already shelled out $300 for a printer with the same mechanism as a printer that cost $75?)

screw window units. ductless/mini-split is where it's at.

Like the samsung? Looked at those but no place to mount the units. The upstairs is the closed in attic, 14' wide at the widest (in the br) but those walls are 5'. The ceiling follows the roof pitch. The end walls have windows or furniture against them.

Not a very good description of the space...Next time we have to change out the hvac, maybe a new style/size will work.

I used a razor somewhere and don't know if I nicked anything or if it's stubble. Now I don't want to make a deposit anywhere to avoid getting it infected.

I kind of like the idea that lot of those units are DIY too. The refrigerant is pre filled in the machine and the tubes are quick connects so no need to braise it together and so on.

I have a portable unit which I modded to make more efficient by adding a condenser intake path to outside, but it's so LOUD! If I got a mini split in the 24,000 BTU range it would probably do the whole house and I could put it anywhere near a return vent. On the other hand, I could pay maybe 2x more than cost of a decent mini split and just get central AC installed which will do a much better job at removing humidity as a bigger volume of air will constantly pass over the coils. Not sure what the cost of getting central AC is now days, about 2-3k maybe for like a 4 ton?

Suppose I should insulate my basement before putting money into hvac though. I should finish the electrical and get that done this year so I don't freeze as much in winter.

for 2-3 months/year, it'd feel hard to justify in the Northeast, especially in a house that already has central air.
Northeast, no, probably not. Houston? Savings from just having the bedroom get max AC would be nice

I ran out for a short errand run around 9 p.m. and it was still hot outside. So sticky and humid and hot.

My SSD shit the bed so I had to buy a new one twice the size for half the price I paid three and a half years ago. So I'm without a proper computer for the next couple days. But I'll be able to install more things from my Steam library on the new drive... so, yeah. I can't really be too bummed, even though it's always shitty when your computer breaks.

The girl at the bagel place only spread the bacon cream cheese on one half of my bagel, so I had to spend time redistributing the cream cheese to both sides!

With a wedding in Salt Lake City this weekend and Tampa next weekend, I am trying to figure out the best way to travel with my entire suit. I'm flying US Air to SLC and Jet Blue to Tampa but I cannot find any sort of policy to see if they hang suits for you. I don't wanna scrunch it up in my suitcase :(

Suitcases usually have a top portion that lets you fold clothes in half.
