My suggestion would be to flash the Alchemy 1.0 firmware on your current WRT54G and boost the signal to see if it reaches OK in all areas of your planned usage areas. If it doesn't, then get a second router and setup WDS or perhaps even enhanced antennas. Bigger antennas will give you an incredible boost compared to the little dinky things that home setups ship with.
