What Firewall Do YOU Use?

With that great antivirus thread, I thought I'd start a firewall one. I don't have any kind of test for you, but I was wondering... what firewall do you use, and how would you rate its level of security?

PC running Smoothwall as a dedicated firewall. Sygate 5.5 on the rest of the home network. I like Sygate. It seems to more stable than the current crop of software firewalls but since its a software firewall, it can be exploited easy like any other software firewall.

I use a hardware router with firewall capability. It works great, it's locked down by default and I have never been compromised while it has been in service.

I give it 5 Stars. 🙂

A Zyxel 324... simple hardware router w/ firewall.

Contemplating replacing it with a Linksys WRT54G to add wireless capabilities to the office.

on top of a hardware firewall/router I also use zone alarm. The hardware firewall does a good job of closing inbound connections however it doesnt prevent applications from making outbound connections.

-Spy

I've tried Sygate 5.5, the latest Kerio, and Norton 2002... they all worked great for me...

I used Zone Alarm awhile back and had trouble with it... a huge system resource hog.

Right now I have no firewall (network has one tho) and no antivirus... I just reinstalled Windows and I'm running some tests... the only thing I have installed is Battlefield Vietnam 😀

I'm running the firewall in the trial WinXp SP2 - it is VERY nice. I use to run a box with win 98 and nat32 sharing the connection - that worked too. . .

Don't routers only protect you from incoming threats? Your computer can still send tings out if you have spyware or whatever... I think...

SMC Barricade. I can't comment on its security; I don't think any of my PC's have ever been hacked, but I don't know if anyone's ever even tried anyway.

Even if I have do get (or have been) hacked, I really don't care, as I don't keep anything important on my computer... I pretty much just browse the web, play games, and type reports.

I dunno, once hacked your computer can be remote controlled and do illegal things - and they got your ip address on the logs. . .

wouldnt it be great to be criminally charged for something somebody who hacks into your computer does?

Get yourself a firewall!

I have a hardware NAT router, my Windows box runes Kerio Personal Firewall (free) and Gentoo box runs IPTables/Firehol.

I use Bitdefender AV+firewall... and Windows Firewall from WinXP SP2 😀 LOL... just testing it. I used ZoneAlarm a while back.. but it was a system resource hog. I found ZA's service eats up to 90megs of memory after a couple of days... wtf...
