What file System is the standard now?

OK i have a friend who is a moron. he says that FAT32 is the standard for HD file format and I say its NTFS. this is wht he installed Win2K on a FAT32 drive.

anyway who is right me or him?

There isn't really any "standard" format at all. NTFS is superior to FAT32 and is installed by default on 2k and XP.

XP Home still uses FAT32. I use NTFS but frankly prefer FAT32, since it is such a pain to reformat with NTFS and I don't really care about the security benefits. I have not detected any performance improvement whatsoever with NTFS.

There is no "standard" file format.

Win2k and XP work best with NTFS and use that as default.

The only reasons you'd have for keeping FAT32 are compatibility with Apple systems and legacy apps, and really not even then, since several Mac apps can add support for NTFS partitions and I've yet to find a legacy app that doesn't work in XP's command prompt.

Your friend, in short, is an idiot.

I had to unrar a set of files that came out to be a 4.5 gig file.....fat32 wouldn't allow it...ntfs would....

so if you want to get a dvd burner....it works nicely...

Just do a search on NTFS vs FAT32 - I think there's an AT FAQ on it.

To sum it up, NTFS >> FAT32 and your friend is a moron.
