Jean Valjean eerily shares a good chunk of my life. I'm not 60 but do enjoy wearing a black cravat and a white, crisp shirt, like the respectable widower. He spent 19 years in prison, and while my iniquities have not amounted to these levels of punishment, the crime certainly appears grave in the eyes of Some. I don't appear grave in real life... and neither do I reject notions of God over love and kindness. Neither do I immediately consider the happiness of others over the Good and Just. Interesting parallels between his relationship with a prostitute and my approach to people in general.
And most important difference is that Jean never forgave himself and sought redemption by endlessly trying to help people.
I think Hugo modeled him after Jesus to an extent. Woodworker...prostitute...good deeds.
At any rate, thanks for the post, I like his character.
Cheers !
