What features would you miss the most by switching from android to ios

I have been a long time android user, and blackberry user before that, and have been thinking a lot lately about making the switch to ios.

At the beginning, reasons why i wanted android made it the obvious choice, but i feel like both devices are just copying off each other enough that they both can do what the other can. My biggest problem with android is faulty apps, and my battery life issues.

I have a galaxy s2, and I love it, but im constantly worried about installing anything at all that might mess something up. And sometimes its a pretty common app that was causing the trouble.

I also am reaching the point in my life where i almost think messing with my phone is more of a PITA than anything, and it was something that drew me to android in the first place. For the same reason I recommended friends and family to just get an iphone, i find myself considering the same.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Things i might miss:

Big screen: This is a big one, and i wont be switching until they increase it to at least 4 inches. Seriously, my galaxy s1 had a bigger/nicer screen.

AMOLED: Wont buy a phone without it. A use my phone as an ereader, and having pure black background with white text looks awesome. Not to mention everything else looks better. I need a big nice screen on my phone.

Google integration: I heavily rely on all of google services. I use google sync for contacts, gmail, and most of all google voice. I have switched over and use it as my main number, so i need to be able to make calls from my gvoice number without it being a pain. (main reason why i cant switch to windows phone)

swype: big fat thumbs. I havent used anything else in about 2 years. Is there a swype like keyboard for ios?

android like launcher: this isnt a big one, and i know id eventually get used to ios, but i love my launcher/home screens/ app drawer. Is there a jailbroken app that replicates an android phone?

not having to use itunes: I think this isnt really a problem anymore. Can someone clarify?

google music: Not that i use it much, but i did upload all my music to it, and when i occasionally do use it, its nice to have on my phone.

The ability to switch phone easily: micro-sim :( right now if i wanna use my captivate, i just swap my sim out of my sgs2. The phone without the sim still works because I have my google voice hooked up to grooveip, so i always have a backup that i can use whenever. If iphone just used a regular sim, i could switch back and forth. I've heard many bad stories about the sim card adapter.

google nav: eh not a big deal. I dont need turn by turn. As long as the GPS can find me, and then just show directions to how to get there i can usually find where im going. (worked fine on my blackberry)

tapatalk: is there an ios equivalent? Not a dealbreaker, but it would be nice.

flash: meh, flash is dying on mobile, and i very rarely use it.

google wallet - something that looks promising that i might like, but looks like carriers plan on blocking it, so i dont even want to get my hopes up.

ubuntu for android: looks awesome, but we will see i guess.

epub reader like aldiko: is there one out for ios?

youtube HD: does ios have it?

emulators: i have all older emulators right now, are they also out for ios? (nes, gen, gba, psx, snes, etc)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thats about all i can think of right now (i know i was reaching a little at the end, i put the main ones in bold). Basically, I love android, but im getting older, and just want something that works without hassle. Im pretty set on getting the iphone 5 when it comes out, but i just want to hear what people would miss the most to make sure im not really missing anything.

I might pick up/ trade my captivate for a ip4 just to try out for a while. The last time i used an iphone was when the 3gs came out. (i think i was still using the original) Also if anyone wants to speculate on the release date on the ip5.........

1) Impossible to screw up a SGII
2) If you don't want to screw with it, don't. The SGII is fine stock.

Why are there so many poorly written apps on the android market then? YEa there the obvious ones like words with friends and other terrible apps, but docs 2 go?

I get insane battery life with nothing installed. I install 1 or 2 apps and that goes out the window. And supposedly there not apps that should be doing anything in the background. Most are games lke dead space, GTA3 etc. From my experience, i install them, and DONT play them, and battery life suffers. I uninstall, and everything is fixed. Yes i could try and determine why, and i really dont care about stupid apps anyway, but theres the problem. Im sick of finding and investigating problems.

And The SGS2 stock on ATT is awful. That siri ripoff was probably the most obnoxious app i have ever come across.

I want a stock experience, which is why i usually run CM. Carrier bloat is a big pet peeve for me. Im the same way with windows. If someone i know buys a brand new windows laptop, i usually beg them to install a fresh version on windows.

Android needs to start cracking down on phone makers and carriers.

Use whatever you like. You're paying so you should use what's best for you.

what I would miss if I had to use iphone:

easy Google services integration.
Google maps and navigation
Flash. Yes, I need it. Yes, I use it. Yes, I will miss it if I didn't have it.
File manager

I think that's about it. I could get used to the size of the iphone along with everything else. iOS is great OS and iPhone4s is terrific phone. It's just that I want to use the best platform and the best phone since I'm paying and for me it's Android and the Galaxy Nexus.

I didn't even mention the state of ICS on my phone (and about 99% of phones out there)

How is it not out yet (yes i know theres finally a somewhat working version that was just released) Theyre already talking about jelly bean, and no one even has fucking ICS. They denied phones from getting ICS because the user would lose their awesome touchwiz expericne.

My captivate has had ICS on it for months. Get your shit together Android/samsung

How does ios compare in google services?

I know gmail isnt great, but i dont email much on the go, i just like to see what im getting as it comes in. I email back and organize when i get home.

I NEED contact sync for email/phone numbers. I dont know if i could make the switch to icloud since im a gmail user.

I dont use my calendar much, but im sure theres a way to use google calendar on ios that compares to android right?

Why do you list file manager? What would you need that for in ios that you can do in android. The only thing i can think of is occasionally i like to download a file, and then upload it to dropbox/email it/etc. but theres gotta be a similar way in ios. right?

Thanks for your input btw

The Galaxy S2 i9100 is getting ICS on the 15th. any delay the i777 sees after that point is 100% At&t's fault not Google or Samsungs.

Honestly there are so many things I would miss if I left Android i'm not sure where to start with listing them.

I know, and to be honest, I really dont care much about ICS, since i think GB does everything i need. Its just sad that themeing and skinning prevents people from having the newest OS. And no one wants these skins, so its really pointless.

I think the reason Macs have made a comback is because people got tired of extra bullshit on their pc, that to most is indistinguishable from a virus/spyware etc. (pop ups non-stop, computer runs slower etc.) The truth is windows is wonderful, and they shouldnt be having the experience that they were having. The moved to mac, and experienced mac how a mac should be.

I think the same is happening to android phones, and im hoping they smarten up before its too late.

You have to root to get rid of the crap apps :(

I still haven't figured out how to get rid of the email app on my SGNote...

FWIW, when I use my wife's 4S, it just feels like taking a step backwards from ICS and my Galaxy Nexus.

Root and remove using titanium backup?

Funny you should being up the note, because it was a device i was kind of interested in, but:
1.took forever to get to the US
2.swapped out the soc for a less powerful one
3.the s-pen im sure requires some proprietary software, that requires you to use samsung apps. - which probably would make it hard to put CM on there.

Just sucks that it doesnt just come with a standard OS. Its gotta feel good just to upgrade to an OS and know exactly what to expect.

FWIW, when I use my wife's 4S, it just feels like taking a step backwards from ICS and my Galaxy Nexus.

I think i need to use one for a while to see if i could do it. In my head i think it wont be that bad, but only having one physical button could be a pain.

Do you think if i used a iphone4 i would get the same expericne as the 4s right now (dont care about siri, and i only want to use it for a week or two. I know the 4s is faster, but im trying to get a feel for ios)

From what I have read the Android skins are largely the carriers fault as well, the CEO of Motorola actually stated that At&t and Verizon don't want all of their devices to be running stock Android.

While most of the manufacturer skins are awful I think Touchwiz 4.0 on the Galaxy S2 is the exception to that rule. I actually like it much better than stock Gingerbread and it does perform well and add additional functionality.

I have an iPad and an android phone, and I honestly can't think of anything that would stop me from freely switching from ios to android depending on which one has the better hardware. Screen size is a big deal to me as well, which is why I use an android phone, but I am not attached to the services of either to the extent that it would sway my decision. HTML 5 has gotten prevalent enough that flash is almost a nonissue for me, and I don't live or die by google services integration. All apple really has to do to get my phone business is put a bigger screen on their phones. All android has to do is keep the big screens and polish up the user experience a bit.

The only thing I would say is that if an AMOLED screen is a make or break for you, I'd start saving for the Galaxy S3.

There are some parts of TW that i like (swyping left or right to text or call, etc. And its not hideous, but its just the fact that its there pisses me off.

How hard is it to leave the option to remove it?

If there so insistent on putting their shit on there, at least make it removeable. TW is basically a launcher, and a skin. Let me install a new launcher, and completely REMOVE TW. Same goes for all other skins. (especially sense /puke)

+1, thats how im starting to feel. I just need google voice to work right, google sync, and a bigger screen.

no chance of apple putting AMOLED's in the next iphone? I need those deep blacks!!! lol

Just so you know you can sync most of google services with iCloud and vice versa. I have all of my google stuff sync to iCloud then iCloud sends it to my iPhone.

Wow . . . I can honestly say I've never seen a single post get every single thing wrong.

- Google Play has its share of good and bad apps. But if you install only the shitty ones, you'll come away with a bad taste. There's tens of thousands of good ones, and they aren't hard to find either.

-Installing apps generally does not effect the battery life. I've got a couple hundred installed on my Nexus and have seen zero impact on battery life. Including Dead Space, GTA3, and several Gameloft titles. Unless you're playing them, they aren't doing anything but take up storage space.

-If you don't play or use an app after you install it, its not the app's fault. Its yours. Uninstall it if you need the space.

-Android had voice actions first, so its more accurate to say Siri ripped off Android voice actions and wrapped a pretty name around it. Unless you've got a thick accent or mumble badly, Android voice recognition is damn good. There's some 'assistant' type apps out there that aim to mimic Siri, but I can't comment on those.

-You complain about problems and then admit to rooting your phone, voiding the warranty, and installing CM? Great, congrats, you want total ownership of your device. Good for you. I want that too. But, if you're going to do that, you have to take the trouble shooting part that goes with it. You're not on the official path with CM.

I only install good apps. I do this because i value battery life above all else. Its a crapshoot which app will start acting up. Yes ive got cpuspy and betterbatterystats installed to anaylze when my phone starts to screw up, but it shouldnt happen this much.

I agree it shouldn't, but for some reason it does. No idea why.

I dont need space, have plenty since i have no apps installed basically

Im aware android had voice actions first, and i think they do it better than siri. My problem is they tied it to the home button, and made it close to impossible to get rid of. "What would you like to do?" I would like you to shut the hell up stop bothering me when i accidentally double-tapped my home button in the middle of class.

Yes i rooted and installed a custom ROM because i want a STOCK experience, like the one google intended, not what fucking ATT and samsung want to shove down my throat.

I have done my part as far as troubleshooting goes, personally im sick of it. Its insulting that you assume i do no troubleshooting, when i actually have done a ton of it. Theres just comes a point when i have come to the realization that its probably just not worth it anymore.

Did you read before you posted?

Well, to address the first post...

1) Big screen: no help there. I agree you'll miss it a lot.

2) AMOLED : coming from a Samsung Captivate, I actually don't miss AMOLED at all. Perhaps it was just my captivate, but the screen had horribly oversaturated and clipped colors. It couldn't display gray shades right (they were more like very dark red or green). And it looked grainy due to weird sub-pixel arrangement. Viewing angle was horrible as well. Trust me, though people may try to tell you otherwise, there is very little difference between the iPhone 4's IPS display vs AMOLED, except that AMOLED saturates the colors and make them look off. Not going to go into sharpness, of course.

3) Google Integration: you can get your Calendar, Mail, and Contact synced from your Google account. There's a Google Voice app if you want to use Google Voice. If you want even more seamless integration, jailbreak the iPhone.

4) Swype: as above, jailbreak the iPhone. In any case, stock iPhone keyboard is a lot more accurate and responsive than most stock Android keyboards.

5) Google Music: I know it's starting to sound like a bad record, but there's an app for it.

6) Tapatalk: there's an official iOS version of this app.

7) ePub reader: iBooks officially does it. iBooks also does PDFs.

8) Youtube HD : depends on the video. Some HD videos aren't compatible with iOS. But I'd imagine that whatever works on Android should work on iOS too.

9) Emulators: you can get them after you jailbreak. But they suck. This is one area where iOS is inherently behind Android, by light years. If this matters to you, don't get iOS. I would actually recommend that you stay away from iOS for this one.

My SGS2 screen is 1000x better than my captivate screen. Even just reading text is painful compared to the SGS2, not even considering colors. Really the only reason i want AMOLED is black levels. Like i said i read a lot on my phone, and the experience is almost as enjoyable as reading on my e-ink nook. If apple's LCD technology can produce pure blacks, then thats good enough for me. Image quality is already there.

Good to know that all my Google services will work. If they work so well on ios, what advantages does android have in this department (besides the stock gmail app on android)

Is swype on iphone as good as androids swype? and is it made by the same company? I ask because i tried slideIT and still prefered swype, but im sure i can get used to whatever it is.

I thought there was only a web app for google music on ios?

Emulators i guess arent a big deal. I would play them occasionally, but if i couldnt have them thats ok. Why are they so bad on ios? I guess the only ones id want are NES and genesis, how are those?

ten's of thousand's of good apps? LOL funniest thing you've ever seen. NEITHER market has anywhere close to ten's of thousand's of good apps. iOS has maybe 200, Android has maybe 50. Both stores are 99% POS POS POS apps.

I skimmed over the rest of the nonsense you wrote and am too tired to comment, but I will say that my OLD ASS Windows Mobile 6.1 device had voice actions, so how the fuck did Android have it 1st? LOL your hating knows no bounds. And as usual, it leads to you saying incorrect shit like this

I never understood the "more apps" argument. If I had an iPhone or an Android phone, I'd basically be using the exact same apps... facebook, twitter, messaging, my banking apps, browser etc..

Anyways, Id miss the big screen and the google services. Ever since I got started with SEO, ive been more and more hooked into the google ecosysytem.

Emulators i guess arent a big deal. I would play them occasionally, but if i couldnt have them thats ok. Why are they so bad on ios? I guess the only ones id want are NES and genesis, how are those?

The obvious advantage to Google integration in Android is that it's somewhat more "official" than whatever it is you'll do to iOS. iOS can sync weird stuffs if you are trying to sync more than your Mail inbox. Calendar may sometimes lose data, and even though it reads Contacts right, phone number ordering may be all over the place. Plus you have to jailbreak iOS to get Google Voice even half-decent, and the integration is not as smooth as Android. I guess "official" integration is better any day. But in general, it works when you don't require it to cook eggs.

I actually don't know if Swype on iPhone is as good as Android. The mere thought of it being a jailbreak tweak really puts me off. Then again, I never used Swype extensively. Had it on my phone for about a week before deciding it wasn't for me.

Officially, there is only a web app for Google Music, but that didn't really prevent other developers to make actual apps to inteface with GMusic.

As for emulators, I think the biggest problem is that they aren't that regularly updated (last update was like Jan of last year), and that they cost some Washingtons. On top of that, iOS runs mostly on very slow hardware. The iPad 2 and iPhone 4S aren't that bad, but generally, you get much better performance on Android. NES and Genesis should be fine. Anything above that, depending on what it is, can lag or stutter a lot. PSX as a prime example.

You wouldn't be using the same apps though, there's a difference between MS Word & the word processor that's in Open Office. And even apps that are cross platform, the Android version's rarely as polished and almost never see the same level of updating or support. Ultimately both platforms apps will do the same thing, but do you like a real program or something that reminds you of a Source Forge product that'll never be completed. When a developers has an iOS and Android app, they'll give the highest priority to the one that makes them the most money. Common sense
