What fans can be software controlled?

I'm currently using Tricools and the only way I can change the speed is through the switch. I'll be getting this mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128062 and I want to be able to control a 120mm case fan and 92mm cpu fan with Speed Fan. What fans will be compatible with this? I've heard about PWM but I'm not exactly sure what it is. Are 4 pin fans guaranteed to have RPM sensing and control?

The Abit IP35/IP35-E can control any 2 wire or 3 wire 12VDC brushless fan via the CPU and SYSTEM fan headers. I believe that Gigabyte board requires a 3 wire fan.

Most mobos don't control by RPM, they just detect that a working fan is there if the speed sensor reads above a minimum RPM. They adjust the fans by the internal temp sensors. Normal fans are usually controlled in just a few steps while PWM fans (req. 4-pin fan headers to work as PWM) are controlled over a good range.
