LMK, Need to know if the stock fan is quiet and if it does a good job at cooling. Which budget hs/f is quiet and does a good job at cooling? The hdd must be fast and be cool and quiet.

Well I don't know about the fan/heat sink question. But as for the hard drive, the IBM GXP series gets my vote.

The stock heatsink/fan on a retail Celery700 is pretty pathetic, but does a reasonable job at stock speed. If you're looking for a quiet heatsink for overclocking, look at the Taisol CEKs and CGKs, can't beat them at that noise level.

As for hard disks, I've got two Fujitsu MPF3204AH's in my machine, and they are near-silent when operating - I can barely hear seeks with the fans in my machine OFF, let alone on. I've got two older IBM 22GXPs, and a newer 75GXP, and found that the noise of them "grows" slightly as they are worn in - not loud at all, but louder than my Fujitsus. They are 20gb, 7200rpm units, but AFAIK they are "only" UDMA66, which makes no appreciable difference in the slightest. Run cool to the touch even without ventilation (I've run them in my case with all the fans 'cept the CPU one disabled).

cheers

if you're not overclocking stick with the stock heatsink, or you may want to look for a golden orb(for socket 370) because celeron 700's don't put out too much heat, it may do a better job at cooling than the stock sink. as for hard drives, my Maxtor DiamondMax is very quiet(then again i can't hear much of anything over my FOP38 and 4 80mm fans :p)

most new hard drives are very quiet.

my retail p3-700e comes with a sanyo-denki HSF, a 1.21c/w heat sink with a 9.x cfm fan.
VERY VERY quiet, but can't handle any OC

hm..i have been using the retail fan that came with my celeron 600 and running it at 900 with no problems. but i heard lots of good reviews for the golden orb.

as for the hdd, another vote for the ibm gxp! i think it should be the 34 gxp.
