What exacty is a CODEC? I downloaded a pack for KazaaLite and idk what it does.

Hopefully this lets me view more kinds of videos with different extension?

for the most part.

codecs are required for divx, xcid, ac3 and many more types of encoding in files. you need the codecs so your media player can decode the encoding :)

nimo codec pack seems to be the ticket in most cases.

all media needs a codec in order to play back on your computer. that said, the codec packs are generally awful because a lot of them have spyware

No, it's compress/decompress, atleast in this context.

Codecs are basically dlls that have compression routines in them that video players user to decompress the audio and video data. Without codec modules every video player would have to know about every type of video and audio compression that is and ever will be created.
