What exactly is the purpose of a tie?

It's just a peice of fabric hanging down the front of your torso.. the only significant purpose I see it having is covering the buttons on a dress shirt, is it just a fashion thing? I don't hate wearing one at work or anything, actually makes me feel more professional (only 22).

all i know is that in the future, when they dig up our bodies...they are gonna think we strangled the men, threw them in a box, and buried them 6 feet under.

A tie was invented to cover and protect dress shirts while dining formally. It was then thrown away. Ties were originally glorified napkins. Nothing like society to make a fashion trend out of a napkin. What's next? rolling up your jeans to look mentally handicapped? Oh wait...
