This is how I see it

When SS was instituted the average lifspan was 60 years...

Now its in the 70s...

It was made with intention that people would die earlier and I'm sure if each person is leeching off of SS for an extra 10 years more its going to have huge effects

Here is my take:

Lunar Ray - I am 18. I do not want to pay into something where I will get no benefit

I completely understand your position 100% but the point is you are taking a "its not my problem" apathetic viewpoint.

Why should I pay into something that I will not be able to enjoy!

If you were 18 and were put into the EXACT same position would you not appeal to the older generation telling them of your predicament? We are trying to do that but instead the old (take the term as you will...if you are offended how about "Social Security Receiving Adults") people don't care.

We want something

You want something.

Isn't this a position for compromise? Then again the AARP doesn't understand what compromise is and they are leeching us just enough to keep us alive so that when we become geezers also they will try to befriend us.

Like hell I'm going to do that.

I have my three grandkids living with me and have for years... the oldest is 19 the youngest is 13 the mid is 17... they are very active in school... the oldest is VP of his college student body... and the others are activists in their own levels.... so I'm not without an earful..often!...
I am trying to incite them and you to action... anything is better than what we have now... you will not get SS when you need it nor if the economic guru lets your 401k sink will that be available either... Retirement needs security... like Social Security... Something so you can live when you can no longer work.. or if there is no work available for you or you become disabled you can still survive.. Not everyone is a Ph.D. or whatever capable of earning and wisely investing for someday down the road... or a rich Business man.. some just get by 8 to 5 for 50 years and expect something in return for the something they put in...
Perhaps some would not mind if the elderly starve (I won't) but, some will... perhaps we need a more "little house on the prairie" attitude where everyone takes care of their parents when they get old and when the parents die they get the house.. I don't have THE answer just an answer... Congress has the power to fix the mess .... but, no one seems to be holding their feet to the fire... the brightest of the bright are at their beck and call... lets get it fixed... Yell at the top of you lungs... not at me at them... and do it now and every day.. till it gets sorted out.... IF YOU DON'T YELL YOU WON'T BE HEARD!!!!

So basically, SS (barring the disability and parental-loss compensation aspects) is basically the gov saying, hey, you're too stupid to save for yourself and plan for your future, so I'm going to do it for you?

LunarRay is right on!

Charrison, your 401k may be recovering nicely, but investing and accumulating is only half the story. When you have to take the money out also needs to be considered. Mess up either of these and there may be no food on the table when you are no longer able to invest more.

No doubt things need to change. Personal accounts are a start at an answer, but not the answer.

Some people are going to have to take out more than they put in, some people are going to put in more than they take out. This is the way it has to be because some people are going to be unable to support themselves before they put in enough to cover what they take out.
