I have been looking in the forums and see a lot of .net and NFR software. What exactly is this? I know that MS gave out some software, like Visual Studio, at conferences. What is the real differance in this type of software.???????

NFR just means Not For Resale
.net is the newest release of Visual Studio

The version that they gave out that the Microsoft conferences was Visual Studio.NET. It's the newest version of Visual Studio and allows you to integrate programming languages (that's what the MS guys told us :p). The software that they gave out is NFR, meaning not for resale. If you sell it, you violate the license agreement. There really is no difference between retail and not for resale software except for the license agreements.

>NFR software

Like ojai00 said but to add, normally NFR software can be sold to LARS (Large account resellers) and MSCP's (Microsoft Channel Partners). I work for Compaq and they are Channel partners which entitles me to purchase NFR software. For example I bought XP Pro full version not the upgrade for $96 Cdn. which normally sells at Future Shop for $399.

The conditions that come from buying this software is that you not sell it and for it to be for personal use or demos, not a business. Unfortunately some LARS or MSCP employees buy the original microsoft NFR software and do sell it to make a profit. It's people like that, that will eventually get us cut off from this program.

Microsoft sent me the following by Email on Friday:

Dear Visual Studio.NET Academic campus launch attendee,

Thank you to all of you who were able to attend one of our campus launch events over the past month! We sincerely
hope you had a great time and enjoyed learning about Visual Studio.NET. Feel free to send any event feedback to
gdnsfeed@microsoft.com. Additionally, be sure to visit www.gotdotnet.com/student and www.msdnaa.net for updated
developer information geared toward the academic developer community.

We've been receiving quite a few questions about the software included in the gift bags at event registration. The
software included in these bags are full licensed and legal "Not For Resale" (NFR) versions. Please be aware that
NFR software is fully functional and legal for use by the person it was given to. However, this software is not
licensed for resale distribution and may not be resold in any fashion, including auction websites. If you have any
questions about what can be done with NFR software feel free to send email to NetSafe@Microsoft.com.

Thanks again,
The MSDN Academic Alliance Team
