what exactly is backlight bleeding?

just brought a new lcd monitor, what are some of the crucial elements that i should check for defects and see if this is a good lcd monitor or not?

Start with dead pixels and lighting uniformity.

Find a way to have the lcd panel on and displaying a full screen, all black image. Check to see the edges if light is showing through.
