Mud: Multi User Dungeon. At least, it was in the days of the 14.4Kbps modem and Netscape on your 486. I'm not sure about now, I think they are all gone. I know they are text based though.

Oh, and for the original question:

circlemud is a popular MUD codebase, you can d/l some source code there.
Warning, it's in C, so it's optimized for low-end systems
(think 286's with under 2 MB of disk space, the original was coded like 12 years ago)

MUDs are definitely not gone... still lots around. But a lot of the players have moved to Everquest though. Almost 20% of the people i use to meet in EQ were from a MUD.
