what exactly does Thunderbird do?

It's an email program, and it's the one I've been using for a long time now. I got tired of Outlook and I've not looked back since I made the switch.

Decent basic e-mail/contacts program. I switched to it from Outlook 2003 last year, and I've been using it since I switched to Outlook 2007 Beta 2 a week or so ago.

Below is the correct place. Above is generally stupid.

But I think there is a toggle switch somewhere in the config.

I have to disagree.

Telling someone their preference for where to start typing is stupid, is stupid.

I can sort my email messages to show first message on top, or bottom, (effectively, date/timestamp of the messages) so why shouldn't I be able to sort the email itself the same way?

This netiquette goes back to usenet, where you'd have long threaded discussions, and there would be a lot of messages that wouldn't make any sense if you didn't first read what the person was replying to. Heck, imagine if I'd written my reply above quoting you. Why do you like reply-below for Anandtech but not for e-mail? Even with work e-mail, once you get enough, reply below makes sense. You can flip it if you want...there's an option somewhere. In SeaMonkey, right-clickyour account or Edit->Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings -> your account -> Composition & Addressing, look in the Composition pane for

[x] Automatically quote the original message when replying
Then, [start my reply above the quote [v]

It gives you a bad hangover and indigestion. I'm not even going to mention how bad it tastes. You only need it for playing really bad games, and even then I would recomend drinking something better. You were talking about the beverage weren't you?

I prefer to read the new information first, and then refer to the original message as necessary. Why would I want to re-read things I already have before I get to the new material?

mozilla thunderbird is an open-source email program. similar to outlook (maybe even outlook 2k3/2k7 beta), but free and easy to use...at least for me it was.

Hit the "End" key to read new information first.

I know the solution has already been posted, but here it is one more time in a shorter reply:

Tools >> Account Settings >> Composition & Addressing >> start my reply above the quote

Click Ok then you're done.

I ask again, why did you reply below the people you quoted here? You prefer not to re-read things others have said, right?

heh I see the point you're trying to make here, but e-mail is a little different than a discussion board. more people are often involved in db conversations than in e-mail. you post quotes above your new post in forums so other readers can have an idea of what you're replying to. if you're emailing someone back and forth there's no need to see the original messages first, you know exactly what's there already. so yeah, i'm a start my reply ABOVE the quote fanboy 😉

I thought we were talking about email. On these forums, I'm so used to the reply being at the bottom (default cursor position) that I don't mind so much anymore.

I must say it's quite lame to have to reply below the past messages. When I open an email the first thing I want to see is what the person said. Not all my past emails and have to scroll down endlessly. Glad you can change that.

On here it's fine. You are scrolling anyway to read through the entire thread. So it's not really a big deal. And it's not like we quote the entire thread each time we reply if we even quote anything at all.

Nope, that's Mozilla. Thunderbird is the Email/Newsgroups program.

I've been using it, and generally avoiding outlook. I would give outlook another shot, but as far as I've been able to tell, there's still no easy way to separate out accounts without restarting the program. And at this point in time, newsgroups are more useful to me than the calendar.

Don't compare an email to a forum thread. Yes, you reply below a quote in a forum to show you are responding to a particular person/conversation. Forum threads often include many speakers and a few conversations in one thread.

Emails on the other hand, are generally more of a linear conversation. A complete conversation, in order. Not always of course, often there are multiple people that are contributing, but it's still one conversation. So, if you open an email, and know the whole conversation, why would you want to scroll down through 1, 3, or 5 or more pages of text until you see what they wrote, then reply. Just open it up, and the relevant info is right in front of you. If you are brought into a conversation that's already started by being added to the To or CC list, just start at the bottom and read up. It's not like reading the top line will spoil the story for you...

Just my .02
