I don't like them either but yes, very popular in the south and especially the foothill/mountain regions. I wonder if their popularity is attributed to the fact that, for many generations, those boiled peanut stands on the sides of the old roads were where you would go to ask for the "special peanuts," meaning hooch from one of the local moonshiners.
