It is mostly just rent/mortgage and gas that cost more here, but everthing else is about the same. But the cost you pay to live here is well worth it.

Ditto. Don't forget that your income is adjusted accordingly when you move to CA so it's not a total loss.

I'm 99.99% sure that we don't get taxed on milk and eggs.

I dont' think we get taxed on groceries in general.

Just soda, snacks, and fastfood are taxed.

damn wtf, why are we taxed on groceries here

You forget that California has a ton of research facilities and a large software development industry. There are a lot of techies and eggheads in California to balance out against the trendy, New Age folk in West LA.

Massachusetts is more expensive than Cali without all the great qualities of Cali.

California sales tax varies by county, most between 7% and 8.5%. There is no sales tax on groceries. Sales tax at restaurants is the same as the regular sales tax.

everything else is about the same, the only thing i really see that is more is the cost of gas. maybe 10% more but other then that milk costs the same etc.

Maybe Arizona (Phoenix in particular) is an anomaly, but my grocery bill was about 20% higher for similar items there than over the Midwest. It was only comparible in price if you were shopping at a grocery store that you had the "savings card" at (Bakers, Albertsons, Safeway, ect) and they were running good promotions. If you didn't have your card on you, you got raked over the coals.

Milk was almost $4.00 a gallon, produce was more expensive, meat was A LOT more expensive, and most of the freezer section items were considerably more expensive as well.

I'd image that CA, with a higher cost of living than AZ would have similar if not worse prices.
I just moved to Tempe, AZ from northern cali and the prices are essentially the same. The tax in maricopa county (arizona) is 8.1, tax in contra costa county (east bay) is 8.25. I don't notice much of a difference in day to day stuff. Gas isn't even that different

I've been here 46 years,

If I didn't do it then, I'd have to live in (cough cough) Richmond, VA.

Hmm, I only pay $45 a month for 100/300/100k coverage for a 2005 Scion TC with $500 deductible and I live in the 5th highest crime rate city in the country. I wonder how much more it will cost out there.

It's not about the city overall, it's about the zip code.

If you live in a burbs, it will be cheap.

Well I live in downtown Richmond, anyway is Westwood and Beverly hills considered the suburbs?

when i lived in westwood, full coverage on my 1998 civic with my perfect driving record and a female under 25 cost me... 1800ish a year. i think. it went down the second year of my policy, plus i had the AAA dividend. i have since moved to koreatown, and they jacked up my rate an extra 200 a year. now i have progressive and my yearly rate is about 1600, for full coverage on the same car, but with 100/300/100 and a 1000 dollar deductible.

you will need to allot money for parking tickets if you don't have a garaged parking spot. almost everywhere you go you have to pay for parking or you have to get it validated.

sales tax in LA county is 8.25%. restaurants tax the same rate, they don't charge more. CA does not tax necessities when grocery shopping.

rent, car insurance, gasoline will cost you the most money. also since it sounds like you'll be near UCLA... if you're going there, IF you get a parking space, yearly parking is very expensive.

my econ teacher said he visited his daughter in kansas and food for 5 (this was an expensive restaurant and everyone got stuffed) and it came out to $60. same in cali (at least in the bay) would be like $120 or more

Is this a sincere question or a joke? I really can't tell!

In case you're really asking:
Beverly Hills is just east of Westwood, where UCLA is. Nestled between them lies Holmby Hills where the Playboy mansion is. Just across the street (Sunset Blvd) from Westwood's UCLA is Bel Air. Just to the west is Santa Monica, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades & Malibu.

Overall, this whole span is about the most expensive real estate anywhere in the western USA other than downtown San Francisco. It's full of exceptionally wealthy people. I suppose Montecito (Santa Barbara), Rancho Santa Fe (North San Diego county) and the mansions down around Hillsborough south of San Francisco are the only other places in California that reach to that rarified price level.

NO, Westwood and Beverly hills are NOT considered the suburbs !

Actually, it's the cultural epicenter of the southwestern USA, or maybe of the whole USA west of New York! Ha!

Food, gas, rent or mortgage, insurance, restaurants, movie tickets, etc. all cost more there than most other places. You more or less have to pay to park your car anywhere. You have to stand in line for anything you want to do. And it's very crowded, intense traffic, little open space except off in the distant hills.
