What else for my wireless home network!

My current network is through FireWire (IEEE 1394 wired). I need to go wireless now but need help knowing what to buy. Here's what I must be able to do:

  • Connect between my 2 computers
  • Share my ADSL Internet connection
  • My printer which is connected to PC1 must be useable from PC2
  • Share files between the 2 computers
  • The wireless network must be able to handle at least 54 Mbps

Both PCs have a PCI Network Interface Card (the one with the RJ45 port). Is this suitable for wireless networking?

So is all I need a wireless router? Which type? Remember, at least 54 Mbps!

You need a wireless G router then. The network cards will not do anything for your wireless network but if the modem is close to one of the computers, you could just plug it in instead of using wireless on it. On the wireless machine(s), you need either a pci or usb (my preference) wireless network adapter.

OK so if ignore the PCI network cards in both PCs, I need a wireless G router. Will this connect in the main PC, and allow my ADSL cable to connect to it too?

Then all I need is a USB or PCI wireless adapter for the 2d PC right? And this USB/PCI card will find the router on the 1st PC, and detect the ADSL connection connected to it as well?

You should build a peer-to-peer Network around a Wireless Cable/DSL Router.

It should look like this: http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

In addition, read this short faqs.

What modem do you have? You can most likely still use the one network card.

My modem is a USB ADSL modem. The ADSL cable goes into it, and the modem is connected by USB to the PC.

If I by a router, will the ADSL internet cable fit in it (RJ11)? How does this router connect to the PC? I would prefer it to connect to the PC via the RJ45 network card that's already in my PC.

And my 2nd PC should be able to communicate with this too.

Your problem is a USB Modem (USB modem do not work with regular Cable/DSL Routers).

If you plan to run a solid stable Network you would need to invest in an External
Ethernet Modem, otherwise forget about the fancy list in your OP.

OK, would this work?

I get a wireless ethernet router. I plug my ADSL line into it. I plug an ethernet cable to the router and the other end into my PC's ethernet port. This PC will now obviously have the Internet.

Now, I get a PCI or USB network card for my 2nd PC, and let it find my router. It will then be able to use the internet from the router, AND be able to send and recieve files from the 1st computer.

Is that right?

No, if your current modem only has a usb hookup, you need to buy a new modem that has an ethernet connection. From that connection comes your router and then filters out t o your pcs.
