actually, I like my grey hair and wish I had even more.

you don't see many 21-year-olds with grey hair.

I started developing gray hair at around age 17. Prior to that, I had one small patch of gray about the size of a dime just a few inches "behind" my ear.

Now I'm 37 and I'm over 50% gray. I've gone much shorter with my hair since, which only makes the gray stand out more (particularly the sides).

It sucks, if it weren't for the gray I could easily pass for late twenties. Now I look ~40ish.

Yeah, and I'm considering hair dye for the first time. (Actually my wife is picking up some temporary dye today.)

Lack of sleep in Grad School started it for me. No way to know about correlation/causation.

B12 deficiency, thyroid hormone imbalance, smoking, all can create premature graying, but in your case it sounds like genetics.

live with it or dye your hair.

Caring too much about shit, causing stress, which leads to premature aging.

that's also genetic. my mom's side is anal and neurotic.

This is most likely the reason.

I have been anemic most of my life and have few, if any, grey hairs and am now 37 years old. This provides doubt that anemia is a cause of grey hair. I do not enjoy worrying over things so I do not. Life is more enjoyable this way.

Stress can't cause grey hair. It is genetic not stress.

Stress definitely does cause grey hair, as well as balding.

No scientific study has ever shown this. It is only a old wives tale.

There are times when life experience and logic overcome an unreliable "scientific study", and this is one of them. Stress is just one of many possible factors in developing grey hair or balding.

Here are the major events I have seen in my life that have determined for me that stress can cause grey hair or balding.

My last two years of university were very high stress for me since I had to deal with the standard academic stress typical to an engineering program as well as the stress of a wife who could not handle the stress of her own academic program. During this time, she started showing grey hair as did I. Since my divorce has finalized, my head has cleared itself of grey hair.

My father started developing grey hair in his beard a few years before his own divorce but before my parent's divorce ended, his beard went full white.

It is well known in the submarine community that the person filling the most stressful position on the boat is the Chief Petty Officer in charge of the Auxiliary mechanical division. This person can be immediately recognized by anyone due to the typical bald head and anxious behavior.

I was graying and starting to loose my hair when I was 21. BY my mid 20s I had salt and pepper hair. At the age of 30 my hair was considerably thinner and grayer....yet I was still sleeping with 18-21 year old girls. Concentrate on yourself and your personality and stop worrying about what genetics has dealt you.

The first time I saw gray hair, I was in my early 20s <just finished college>, now I am in my 30s and I have about 25% of gray hair, especially on the sides.

I believe it is due to stress and not much of sleep. I don't smoke/drink. Can't be genetic because my older brother didn't have any gray.

i don't see how your brother's lack of grey hair means it's not genetic...

Marriage causes gray hair.

When I met my wife, I only had 2 gray hairs. Now? You really have to look to find hair that ISN'T gray...
It's marriage I tell ya! :p

I had my first grey hair at 14.. in my mid 20's it went to salt and pepper, now it's all white.
Just get used to people saying you look like Johnny Carson, Steve Martin or Rich Little.

Vitiligo did it for me. Ah the fond memories of 6th grade classmates shouting "Hey, you have grey hair!" when they first see my patches. At least once a week someone new would find out and shout the same thing.

I'm almost positive using the computer causes gray hair and hair to fall out. I had neither problem prior to when I began using computers. They are evil, I tell ya.

Tell that to my knee surgeon. In addition to being an orthopedic surgeon, he's big into motocross racing. (go figure) A couple of years ago, he piled his bike up in a race and broke his collarbone. Within 2 weeks, his hair went from pepper with just a touch of salt to solid gray/white. I had been in his office for an exam less than a month before his accident, and my next appointment got postponed for a month while he was recuperating, total span between appointments-about 6 months. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes...
No one has ever been able to explain why, but times of extreme stress (not just "my girl left me, I got fired, OH NO, the IRS wants to audit me" types of stress) can indeed do this to people. There are lots of anecdotal "war stories" about it happening to people over the years.
