I'm 21, and my head is covered with grey hair. I have naturally very dark hair. premature greying is genetic on my mom's side. I started getting my first grey hair at the age of 15.. I was a sophomore in high school.

so I was wondering if there are anything out there, other than B-12 deficiency, thyroid imbalance, and anemia, that can increase the number of grey hair. things such as... pool water, acid rain, or other various chemicals.

I have no history of any of the above mentioned conditioned. I eat lots of meat and fatty food, lift weights, have 13% body fat, and have a healthy heart and blood pressure etc. and maintain a 150lb body weight. I intake a lot of protein and carbs, and have been doing so since I was very young. I'm a healthy person in general, so I can't see how my grey hair is a product of an illness or poor health. there has been one exception though - according to my blood test, I have a 10X normal amount of creatine phosphate in my body, but I doubt that contributes to anything. I don't take creatine supplements - I only take protein shakes, vitamins, and omega-3.

so what can be causing my premature greying, other than genes?

Caring too much about shit, causing stress, which leads to premature aging.

stress (especially trauma)....but that doesn't seem to be your problem. It's probably all genetics for you.

I don't believe any of the health/diet reasons you've listed would prevent grey hair.

Grey hair is due to a lack of melanin. Age is one factor. Do you smoke? Eat fish?

The elements of stress and old. You have too much of one or both in your diet. You should be careful, you can OD on that stuff.

I've listed the health/diet because I thought maybe those were catalysts of grey hair...

I don't smoke (never even touched a cigarette), but I do eat a lot of raw fish.

I might be in trouble. I think my dad said he was mostly gray by age 30. I'm not quite that far along, but I definitely have several gray hairs up there. A fair portion of my facial hair is already gray though.

Why I'm in trouble: I'd be going against my grandfather's advice. "Never get old. Just don't do it. It's not fun!" followed by a laugh. :)

I doubt anything but genetics plays a significant role. We love to think we can alter things like this because it makes us feel empowered, but in reality we can't.

There is only one element I can think of that causes grey hair...look it up on the periodic table: OLD

Psh, I wish all I had to worry about on my head was grey hair.

Usual causes are stress and lack of sleep, or so I heard.

My brother in law was totally grey by the age of 16. Can't outsmart genetics.
